Many years ago, I submitted a couple of photos to a juried group exhibition. All were selected. I was happy. One I was particularly proud of. On the exhibition's opening day, the jurors held a discussion for the photographers. They discussed the many winners. They came to the one I'd submitted that I considered my best. "Who made this photo," they asked. I proudly raised my hand. "This would have been the best in the show if there had been shadow detail here (a small space where I wanted it dark). My "I wanted it dark," carried no water with the jurors.

This is a long way of saying that while you want an area dark, you need to have some detail visible in the dark area.

Long story, good lesson.

I understand that you're new to photography. Read a bit about how to make images, then look at things. Also many years ago, while saving money for my first camera, everywhere I went I was "taking photos," just seeing things and doing a mental "click" of my mental camera. When I got my camera (a Minolta SRT101), I was ready to go and, honestly, made some really nice images (I still have the negatives).

Learn how to see. Learn how to use your camera. Have a purpose for your photos...why you make them.

Enjoy and grow.

Manual focus abourt 20 feet away-somebody more experienced can help here, and close down to f22.

I faced something of the same dilemma on a recent night shoot, then rethought it afterward. So, I checked a little Android app called 'DOF Calculator' to confirm what I suspected: focus (manually) at infinity, and at f16 it should be in focus as close as 35 feet, too.

Anyone else care to comment on hyperfocal distance? (Or correct my possible misunderstanding?)

As a newbie, you only learn by shooting and asking questions... And remember, all photographers, including pros, have made all the same mistakes you are going to make. Just learn from them (both the pros and your mistakes).

I once offended a 'pro' by suggesting that all photographers take a fair number of 'so-so' pics. "Not so, not me," he proclaimed. But then, he made his living by taking the same pic time after time -- close-ups of jewelry for catalogs -- so one might hope that he'd take a bit fewer 'bad pics' proportionally than a newbie.

I am new to photography so any help would be appreciated. I took this with my d3200. 18-55mm lense. still learning the camera. I know the foreground is dark. but thats kind of the way i wanted it to come out. I know it could be better, but hey i'm a newbie

My opinion is you need to check out other postings that are well done and compare to use. Your picture is dark, blurring, lacking rule of thirds, no subject ect.......If you want to learn, then post and ask. There is little I would suggest here. Camera data could show what you did, but changing settings would not help. Try again and we can have an honest discussion. David

David, I am still learning so I am sure that I will post plenty of pictures here for critique. I know that as time goes on and the more I learn, the better they will be.
