An interview with Mormorazzi,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I've loved photography since Mom used to snap photos of us when we were dressed in our Sunday best back in the 70's. I started with an Instamatic 104 (the one with the cube on top), Polaroid and Petri film, and then moved to Nikon.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I took a photography course in college in 1975; the professor, Dr. Jay Ruder, said he knew some old guy named Ansel Adams and learned the art under his wing. (I often wish I could go back and pinch that younger version of myself!) I've snapped a lot of pictures in my day and became excited about digital photography about eight years ago.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
A good photo tells a story. It makes me want to know more about the subject.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
We had fourteen guests at our house for Thanksgiving, who had all gone belly-up after the feast except for my husband Bob who was in the kitchen with six of the family dogs. I walked into the kitchen and saw this scene, ran to my desk and grabbed my Nikon D600. I set it to Aperture Priority at f5 for maximum depth of field (no flash). Bob had the family dogs' undivided attention, so I had the opportunity to get low, get him centered and line up the angles so they'd radiate.

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
I shoot in raw, import into Capture NX2 and finish up in Photoshop CC.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
People who like my work have been my driving force. I worked in advertising for a newspaper where I often heard "you have a great eye." Soon, I was asked to photograph chamber events for two Austin suburbs and then began photographing for the Austin Yacht Club. I began sailing and racing in the 1980's, so I had a pretty good idea as to where to get the shots, but two seasoned photographers, Bruce McDonald and Bill Records, gave me tips on how to wait for the perfect moment...snap on the splash. I've taken online classes with Lynda.com, joined photo Meet-up groups and learned a LOT from my fellow Hogs!

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
I might have taken a Photoshop class at a local college and saved some hunting-for-the-answer time.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
It's addictive. Crack addictive.

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
My Hanson Fong flash diffuser, which attaches to my SB600.

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
For portraiture, it's my Nikkor 105 DC (defocus control). For nature walks or photographing moving objects, like my five grandchildren, it's the Nikkor 24-70. Close-up, 105 2.8.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
SB600, the Hanson Fong diffuser (his site is down right now or I'd give a link), white reflectors or diffusers.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
Write, sail, sing, cook or garden.

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
I fell off a dock with my Nikon D90 while doing a glamour shoot out at the Austin Yacht Club one cold November day a few years ago. (My misadventure was archived here on the Hog.)

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
Not now. I took down my site last summer.

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
Train your eye to be looking for the shot...and keep your camera handy!

An interview with Beercat,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
2 years

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
None

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
The basics are important (composition, lighting rule of 3rds) but emotion trumps them all, if the subject is people

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
Canon 6D or a Canon 70D with a bunch of glass. This pictures was with a Canon 6D, 24-105L and one off camera Canon 600EX-RT flash

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
Try to get it right in camera as much as possible so the PP is quick with very little needed

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
David Ziser ........ Inspiration? I think the picture says it all, bottom line, probably the last picture my sister has with our father as she does not live close by

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
nothing, sure the background is a bit cluttered but it's all about catching the moment

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
Composition

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
Speed lights - off camera flash

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?

One on-camera flash and one off-camera flash

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?

An interview with smithdar,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
Always wanted to do it. I retired at age 62 and bought a camera.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I belong to a camera club and take a few classes from time to time. I mainly like landscape and nature.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
I don't know. You can just feel it. It's that wow factor.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
Nikon d7200. Only light was from the candles. Black background.

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
Lightroom and Photoshop. I just go right down the menu and decide if it needs that particular process.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
I really appreciate Ugly Hedgehog simply because it keeps me shooting and thinking of the different themes. The more you do in quantity and variety the better you are going to become.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
Not really. I was going to have my wife holding one candle and I the other, but I just didn't work out that way.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
That you make photos, not take photos.

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
Tripod

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
I use an 18 to 270 for 90% of my shooting and am very happy with it. I hate changing lenses.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
None. I have used a reflector a time or 2, but just about never flash.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
Probably just get old and die.

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
My biggest thrill is that one of my granddaughters is getting into photography.

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
smithdar1948 on Instagram. http://www.instagram.com/smithdar1948

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
Keep on shooting and look at subject from different angles and heights.
