Check out the above link, he is a professional that does workshops in africa, if not then read his recommendations for equipment.....

To quote Hogan:"You want to keep things to a minimum..." Then he gives a list of gear to take that you'd need a sherpa to carry. Totally absurd.

I have been to Botswana, Tanzania, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Zambia -- Botswana is the best place for a single safari. This does not mean you will get to see the big 5. You need a little luck.

Saw all of the big 5 multiple times on each of our Tanzania trips with Africa Dream Safaris.

Been to Kenya and Botswana on separate trips - both were great but i would definitely recommend the botswana area. more of the big 5. more variety. better vantages for photos.
we went with www.wilderness-safaris.com and can highly recommend them. the okavanga delta was just amazing! service was excellent.
they offer several different 'levels' of camps (at least 3) and you can mix & match.

Another vote for Overseas Adventure Travel. For us they were the best overall as far as small group, itinerary, travel support and price. We're going on our second OAT trip this year and are being treated very well again. If you go on an OAT trip you'll find a lot of repeat travelers.

i went to SA with OAT and would do it again. Never stayed in better hotels. We got up early to get the parks before sunrise. We stayed for sunset as well.
pm me and we both save $100. Also there is no extra fee if you are solo (which I was)

My wife and I are planning an African photo safari for next September. There are over 800 safari companies and we're trying to find one that will maximize our exposure to the Big 5 and other animals. Everyone touts their area as the best...from Botswana to Tanzania to Kruger Park, So. Africa etc. etc. Any suggestions on where to go and who to use??

It is probably best to look for this info on Tripadvisor.com

Go where the animals are more abundant; around the first of June is the great migration in MasiMara.

We went to Africa in 1996 (before all the security issues that face us now). We did our own research (two couples)and used Park East Africa Safaris (still in business). It was a 17 day trip. We started in Kenya and then went to Tanzania. We were in Small Toyota 6 passenger vehicles with raised roofs so you could stand or sit. There were twelve of us in the group. The trip leaders were exceptional and the entire experience was extraordinary. Our accommodations were first class. There was no limit on what camera equipment you could bring. This was predigital. My camera at the time was a Canon T90 and my longest lens was a soligor 250mm with a tc. It was long enough to get some very good shots. I used mostly kodachrome and some ektachrome. The trip was not cheap (even then!) but it was worth it. Digital technology brings in a whole new dimension. Whomever you choose have a great trip.

Went on safari with Gregory in 2013. Wonderful trip, great price, loved the tree house lodges, the food was very good.

Did Tanzania with deeann@windowsofnature.com designed for photography. It has got to be the best available. Photography oriented drivers, who get you close as possible to the animals with a knowledge of lighting, speak english and explain in detail about the animals habits. It was wonderful.

Unfortunately her website discusses a trip for 2014 being sold out. Makes it very uncertain if she is still in business.

Yes! she's still in business. 2014 is behind us try 2016. If you are able to go, her Safari has got to be the very best available.
