I did something like that too today....my camera went back to a default setting after changing the batteries...took me a good part of the morning fighting with it before I realized iso was at 64 and WB was on auto...UGH. I was giving serious consideration to the list too.

Im gonna make a card and laminate it. Then Im gonna attach it to the strap until I stop doing this! This is not my first rodeo with this sort of problem. I should be checking the histogram as I go but when you are trying to take candid shots in a group of people you can miss a lot of opportunities while you are checking these settings. I just can't do it very fast yet.

Nikon... I got most of the noise out, and resharpen and doesn't look too bad. I'll post it if you want me to. Let me know. That would be great!

There's still some noise above her head, but I think it's better. It's looks better on my monitor than it does online. Probably because of the compression. That was just a quick edit too.

Yep, cleaned it right up. I am only using Picasa. I downloaded Elements 10 but I am a long way from figuring that out. Thanks for doing that. Maybe I will fish around in Elements and see what I can find. I did not think noise could be corrected!

Nikon.... Check out Topaz DeNoise, they have a 30 day free trial. It's one of the best noise removers I have ever used. I have the complete suite, and love them. That's what I used on your picture. PSE 10 is great too, I use their High Pass Filter for sharpening a lot. You'll like it.

Depends on your camera. Check the manual.

Point ans shoot cameras normally select all three for you on Auto.

Some cameras (like the D7000) allow you to use Auto ISO (or ISO Auto for a D70) or set it to a specific number. In Auto metering mode, all three (shutter speed, aperture and ISO) can vary.

In the ISO Sensitivity section of the D3000 manual:

"Auto and scene modes also offer an AUTO option, which
allows the camera to set ISO sensitivity automatically in response to lighting
conditions."

I'm gonna start carrying a check list of all these things I need to have right. All my co workers expect me to turn out fabulous images. This group of pics was just embarrassing. You can only hid just so much in PP. Thanks for the info.

then the issue is not so much the ISO as it is the ego......well certainly these high expectations - ? are they your co-worker or yours?

when you converted to b&w you lost information - less information more noise - kinda like a political ad.

on my monitor i see very little noise

That's one of my common issues when frequently moving from indoors to outdoors during a shoot. I keep forgetting to check the iso.

I find the histogram in the camera annoying...blocks the view of the image on mine.

I like the list idea...I think i will be right behind ya on that one. good idea to attach to strap...now you will just have to remember to look at it. haha

We had a huge event at our church. To make a long story short, I was pulled outside to photograph some of the leadership with the Indonesian Consulate General. Since I was coming outside from the dark....
I only ruined one shot and asked for a redo on that one.

Funny thing. I was editing some shots yesterday and came across a few noisy shots that were taken outside. The noise level wasn't too bad--kind of looks like a normal ISO 800 shot for my D3000. Funny thing is that I was shooting at ISO 100 1/1600.

Not sure about the D3000 but the D5100 manual states, "If the mode dial is rotated to P, S, A or M after AUTO is selected for ISO sensitivity in another mode, the ISO sensitivity last selected in P, S, A or M mode will be restored".

Also, "Choosing Auto allows the camera to set ISO sensitivity automatically in response to lighting conditions."

So in this case choosing the dread Auto setting might have done you better.

I was taking some pictures at the Hospice Hope run today. I just left the camera in program mode (d3000) so I could could just get some pictures without fumbling with settings. Some of these pictures are so noisy. I did have the camera at a high iso setting from a previous venture. forgot to reset it however I thought the automatic modes would override that and pic its own settings. Is this even an iso issue? I tried to look at the exif data but no iso was stated. Thanks is advance

I'm guessing it is because the ISO was set to 3200:

File name: 1334427095132-dsc_0641.jpg
File size: 241291 bytes (641x800, 3.8bpp, 6x)
EXIF Summary: 1/4000s f/10.0 ISO3200 135mm (35mm eq:202m)

File name: 1334427095227-dsc_0678.jpg
File size: 166010 bytes (800x536, 3.1bpp, 8x)
EXIF Summary: 1/4000s f/8.0 ISO3200 145mm (35mm eq:217mm)

Edit: I'm using EXIF Viewer by Ali Ozer (Mac OS-X only)[/quote

Well, it was set on "hi". I did not know it would go as high as 3200. Thanks for checking it out.[/quote]
