An interview with haroldross,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I have been involved in photography since the mid 1960's when my dad gave me my first camera.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I have no formal training in photography. I am mostly self taught. I teach photography to small business individuals to help them promote their businesses. I do a lot of promotional photography for flyers and posters. I do an occasional wedding or event- mostly to help out my daughter with her photography business.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
A picture should tell a story.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup?
Can you walk us through it? I used a Canon 1Dx with no special setup.

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
I usually take JPEG and raw- JPEG on one card and raw on the other. Most of the time the JPEG are just what I need. On this one, I liked the light coming in the doorway at the end of the hall. I used the raw file and brought up the color saturation and then applied the Nik Silver Efex Pro 2 filter to bring up the sharpness and contrast and convert to monochrome.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
Growing up in a military family, aircraft and architectural structures were my favorite subjects. I am always looking for scenes that would look good in monochrome. When I was in high school I started developing and printing my own monochrome film.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
On this shot, I would have preferred to have a wider lens to make the stairway appear longer.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
Zooming with my feet. I remember taking a picture of a light pole in two shots instead of stepping back a few feet.

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
My tripod.

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
The Canon 85mm f/1.8 USM. Most of my photography is taken around this focal length.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
Usually a flash and a reflector.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
Focus more on motivational speaking.

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
My first experience at street photography was right out of high school. I went to a run down part of town with my dad and one of his friends. We were busy taking pictures when one of the locals came up to us and tried to run us out of the neighborhood since we obviously did not belong. My dad explained why we were in the area and that he was a letter carrier and his route was in a neighborhood next to the one we were in. The man continued to watch us for a while.

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
My work is displayed in a couple of the non- profit organizations on the reservation. Also, my work appears on local billboards.

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
Always have a camera handy. You never know what opportunities may arise.
