I am a Nikon guy but my daughter is happy with her Canon T3. I want to surprise her with a new Canon for Christmas but know little about Canon. In comparisons on-line the direct replacement for her T3 is the T5 but there is also a model SL 1 with similar pricing. If a Hog has either one of these (or both even better) cameras I would appreciate a reply with your opinions. And while I can think of a million reasons to upgrade to the more expensive models, the funding just isn't there. Thank you. Kevin

What exactly are you hoping that she'll gain from replacing a t3 with a t5i or an SL1? You say she's happy with her Canon. Where is the t3 lacking? If you and/or your daughter can't answer that question, why upgrade the body at al right nowl? Perhaps you should consider getting her additional or better lenses instead. The new Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM or the Canon EFs 18-135mm STM comes to mind. New glass can change her whole perspective and perhaps help her grow as a photographer. The t5i has many more bells and whistles and an 18 MP sensor, and the SL1's claim to fame is its small size. Neither will necessarily improve her photography. When she's really ready to upgrade, she'll know why.

Buy glass! Check refurbished. If it must be a body get the ONE DAY SPECIAL @ 210.

I strongly agree about buying a nicer lens instead of an upgrade to the T3, especially since she is happy with it.

The Canon EF-S 18-135 is really nice; I purchased a used one from B&H in January for about $300.

The Canon ultra-wide angle EF-S 10-18 mm is great fun, sharp and very nice, as well. I purchased new for $300.

My third lens is the Canon EF 70-300 mm. I bought that one used too, also for about $300. So, depending on what she enjoys photographing the most, or has expressed an interest in exploring, any of these would be excellent IMO.

I agree. Unless she has a problem, and a budget to spend why change the body? Both the T3, the T5, and even the SL1 have limited system level upgrade capability.

If you want to get her a better camera body a 7DmkII or a T6S could be worthy of consideration, or even a T3i.

Would she notice the difference, or would a new lens or two be a better suggestion?

Has she expressed any frustration?

Did I read the word BUDGET? Just how much money are we talking about?

If we have a kit lens, why buy a 7D II?

If there is frustration with a system, I question if the deficiency is skill-set. No offence intended. That has been my experience. I shoot Rebels from Xti to 60D and found that when I added top rated glass was when I experienced my biggest leap in quality. One of the best photo that I have taken was with the Xti/18-55 kit lens.

The bodies were gifted and I very much appreciate them. That is the only reason that I upgraded.

I hope this helps!

I agree. If she is happy with the T3, any change of body will be unlikely to make much difference. As you say, we don't know what lenses she has. I would be more likely to advocate for a lens that would immediately expand her range of capabilities.

Perhaps the OP can provide a little more information about what she has, and what price envelope there is to work within.

Take the ideas for a lens or a body, if still desired, and check KEH for a EX+ rated equipment. The item will be as good as new with everything but a box. You should mention the lenses she has now to receive still more ideas beyond some excellent ideas so far. Going used will stretch your budget still further.

Perhaps a more creative idea is to give the money and teach how to buy a lens on the street.

My GD I offered a system too. Either the T2i or 60D with high end lenses. Let me borrow the gear and buy gas. I think she has listened to something along the way. She is in HS and checks the loaner cameras out. she shoot the left overs. They are most generally Canon, Canon X's. The most popular are Nikon and little ones.

Used in ABC & K are OK but still over priced for my taste and budget.

I am the OP, and boy did this query provoke some unexpected replies. Perhaps I worded it wrong. My daughter's T3 is on the fritz and the estimate to repair it is 150 bucks. I don't know whats wrong with it but I suspect some form of abuse. The subject came up when she borrowed my D5100 and 2 lenses for a week's vacation. She doesn't like my D7100 and is happy with the 5100 except for the typical mild confusion about Nikon/Canon terminology and menu set ups. Since she is happy with this "tier" of camera and is happy with her 4 Canon lenses, I though it might be a nice gesture on my part to buy her a replacement for Christmas. I am looking at refurbs and noticed the similar pricing on T5 and SL1 at several web sites. Since I don't plan to buy her an un-wanted "upgrade" I just wanted opinions of users of the 2 models as to which and why they prefer it. Sorry if I worded it wrong and thanks for the responses

You shouldn't have to explain every little deal to ask a simple question. Go for the T5; it's not a "pro" camera, but she'll get a lot of good use out of it - and you can't beat the price. I may even buy one for myself - just 'cause!

Kemo - Below are a few links. The wiki page gives links to pages specific to each of the Canon DSLR models. It also gives a table that summarizes the technical specs on all models as well as a graphic at the bottom that shows the relative tiers of the Canon line. (There's a similar page for Nikon.) From that graphic at the bottom I'd suggest looking at the SL1 or a 5Ti or 6Ti. The reason being a change in the processor within the camera. But in reality, a single generation change is likely not going to generate a very tangible difference in the image quality. If the T3 is broken / breaking down, then yes a new body is in order where the minimal investment might be the T5. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Canon_EOS_digital_cameras

The SL1 is a very small physically camera body with a lot of features and capability. A review specific to that model is available at http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EOS-Rebel-SL1.aspx

Cameta Camera sells lots of refurbs although from their advertising, they seem to focus more on Nikon.
