BTW, here's what I'm working on. Bass player for a friend's band quit and threatens to sue if they use any pictures of him, and I'm the only one with pics of their first gig with the new guy.

Interesting project. I'm on a campaign to learn PS and find that kind of capability to be impressive.

Thank you, Rong. I would never try to pass this off as a finished project. Not only are the cutouts rough, but the guy on the left needs to be smaller and the drummer needs to be bigger and I'm still working on the logo.

Point is, this still has a long way to go, but the tablet's making it both easier and faster, and I'm actually enjoying the tedium now. :D

I have to agree with Photographerjim ..., for any serious retouching, a digital pad with pen is a necessity.

The Cintiqs are top of the line for graphic artists and run a couple of thousand dollars. Not really necessary for photo editing.

Despite my praise for Logitech, above, I put out the $300 yesterday for a Wacom Intuos Pro medium at Best Buy. Usually not my favored vendor but they're in their "holiday return period". Instead of the usual 15 day return policy, they'll take returns until Jan 5th. It's like a 60 day trial period, so despite hearing how some folks have trouble getting used to the way it works, I decided to try it.

I'm currently working on a fairly detailed composite, and the difference in speed and precision is amazing! After one day, I don't see returning it.

But as Rong pointed out, probably not the best choice for a laptop. The tablet's as big as my laptop, but I'm using it with a 24 inch monitor. And yes, the cordless mouse and keyboard are still active. Each one has it's advantages.

BTW, here's what I'm working on. Bass player for a friend's band quit and threatens to sue if they use any pictures of him, and I'm the only one with pics of their first gig with the new guy.

Oddjobber, I like where that is going!

Bkellyusa,
I have a small tablet and while it was economical I don't use it much. I find the small size makes it more difficult to use than the mouse. So I do not recommend the small tablet. ymmv. If you are considering a tablet try to find a store where you can try it out first.

As someone that sits in front of the computer for 8 hours a day doing graphic design work, I've been using a Kensington Expert Trackball mouse for the last 7 years. Love it.

I use a Logitech trackball mouse and like it. I do sometimes wish I had finer control but I can get it by zooming in on the area I'm working on.
I've tried my daughter's Wacom tablet a couple of times and find it very awkward.

I have to agree with photographer jim - a small or medium sized wacom tablet is better than any mouse. the pen is much more accurate and precise

Wacom Tablet, get rid of the mouse. Check E-Bay.

Yes, eventually we graduate into using a pad like a skillful gamer/artist, but in addition to a mouse or other device for word processing etc. The discussion was focused by most on mice, personally, I much prefer using a "Trackball" to control, as do Cdouthitt and Psergel (statements above).

There are a wide variety of trackball devices, but be sure to get one with a scroll wheel. What is best? they come wired or wireless, but since you will Velcro to the desk top, so what! Control position varies and "best" depends on your comfort; I control the cursor control ball with my thumb.

I do not allow mice on my computers I have been using a track ball for the past 10 years, I find the track ball more precise than a mouse, you only move your thumb and not the whole device.. I have purchased a pen tablet monitor and find it very accurate I am still learning it, so far so good .

It is a Huion tablet and cost lot less the the Watcom series.

Increasing the size of the image and the speed of the mouse will help. A Wacom tablet is probably the ultimate.

Dan Copeland YES, the touch screen is the dream way to go and if it is your only monitor then the $450 price tag is not as steep as it sounds. The hand/eye control is there and not virtual as with a pad.

Check Dan reference out.
