I agree with you totally. If you loose your internet connection for any reason, then you are out commission for whatever length of time it takes to get it up and running again. As noted here, it is subject to "Murphy's Law" and stuff happens.

Losing your internet connection does not necessarily IMMEDIATELY prevent your using the software - it takes at least 30 days or perhaps even as many as 90 days of no connectivity to prevent the software from functioning.

Ever had an outage for more than 1 or 2 days?

I think I will have to contact Adobe. I have photo files, but no catalogs. I mean LR6 has totally vanished from my computer, all I have is my LR Photo file.

One cannot use LR on an image without first putting that image in a catalog.

We must all pay for the software. None of us ever OWN anything, other than the rights to use software. Most of us have opted to use the Creative Cloud, because it is a viable alternative to the acquisition of the software we want, and nearly everyone who subscribes will tell you they are pleased with it.

You don't understand the subscription service, based on your comments. So, rather than trying to convince everyone how smart you are by NOT subscribing, just be happy with where you are and let everyone else be happy with their decision. Not everyone has your opinion.

Thanks.

I have the CC subscription, and have used LR for several years, and love the program. However, this am I went to export several photos to a thumbdrive, and got some sort of error message regarding my catalog. The program then showed a window which wants me to sign-in for a trial version. After several attempts to bypass (I am definitely not overly computer software savy), I restarted the computer. My LR has now disappeared. It still shows as a shortcut, and in my programs, but when I open them, it defaults to the Trial Version sign-up. Anybody have a clue as to what the heck has happened, and how do I get my LR back.

Let's keep it simple. The same thing happened to me , I Uninstalled LR and opened Adobe Creative Cloud and Reinstalled LR. It worked for me.

Wait, there's more. I'm sure we aren't hearing the whole story.

So an update as well as an opinion (for what it is worth). After searching the web and adobe sites for a possible solution, I finally gave up and contacted support (via live chat). After giving the tech control of my computer, we managed to get everything back up and running with one small glitch. Because it was some sort of Catalog crash, I lost all photos since my last backup (which fortunately was just two weeks ago). Backup lesson learned and IMPRINTED. The Adobe tech was efficient, and solved my problem which I obviously wasn't cabable of. Now an opinion - I still see the CC as the most cost effective choice for ME. I didn't have Photoshop before because I chose not to afford it, so the addition of that software, along with the LR 5 and now 6 updates, I'm still a few hundred $$ ahead of the game. I started with LR2, and this is the first glitch (other than those that were self inflicted) that I have encountered. Love the software.

Cholly, it is clear that you are superior to me in your understanding of Photography, Photo Imaging Software, and probably the whole "Internet thing." Despite being fairly expert at Diagnostic Imaging, I am humbled by this whole arena of IR-to-Visible Light-to UV Imaging and Processing thereof, intertwined directly or indirectly with the Internet. As a slightly knowledgable layman regarding computers (beyond the applications I had to learn using about 5 different computer systems contemporaneously in my everyday work,) I've been learning a good deal from these other UHH people as well as from you. As a "friend," though, this time I must agree with brucewells' assessment of your remarks in his concluding paragraph above.

I'd like to suggest to everyone to also consider participating in a site I was somehow introduced to a few weeks ago: Quora.com .
It has a multitude of subjects, from Art to Medicine to "picking your nose." One may choose as many subject areas as one wants to participate in. However, they do not put up whatsoever with some of the racist crap I've found here and they've got one feature I find annoying: they police one's answers using a combination of programs (which can be ridiculously simplistic,) and actual human beings.

Peace,
lev29 :-)

I just had the same thing happen to me on Sunday. I contacted Adobe and let them take over and fix it. A lot of work and time. I never would have been able to do it on my own. They also said that I had signed out. I don't remember doing so, but sign in and never sign out. I also can't find some pics in Lightroom. I do backup so I know they are there, but what a pain in the neck technology can be. Good luck. Melissa

I am FULLY aware of this subscription service and how it works.

YOU don't seem to understand the context of my comments... but rather than insult you, I will instead tell you that yes, I am perfectly happy with my decision(s) regarding Adobe photo editing software.

Have a good day. ;)

If you backup in LR, then your backup will have your current Catalog. You will probably need to copy your backed up Catalog back into LR and hopefully you will be fine.

This past week I had to replace a failed hard drive on my iMac, but I had everything backed up via time machine, so when I got my Mac back, everything restored successfully until I tried to open any of my Adobe apps.
I wasted an hour or two on line trying to resolve the problem, but gave up Halloween night.
Sunday morning, about 8am I opened a live chat session with Adobe, explained the problem, and an Adobe rep remoted into my machine and had the problem resolved in about two hours. Yes, two hours. Their live chat is available 24/7, and the tech working with me was relentless.
I would have to suggest then, that if you have a legitimate license or subscription with Adobe for the product in question, your best line of defense is to let them fix it so you're not wasting time fiddling with software and can get back to making pictures.
This was the second time I have had to deal with an Adobe problem, and I gotta tell you, they are tenacious as heck and they do fix the problem. I have high praise for their products and service.
