Hi, I have been researching cameras for a few months now. I seem to be pulled toward the Nikon D5500 or D7200. I have lost my canon rebel. I have turned house upside down and it's gone. So, planning a Disney trip in December. So, I am not a professional obviously, or I wouldn't be asking for advice, but not a beginner either. Is it worth the extra for the D7200? If not, what lens do you recommend for the 5500? Or should I just buy the kits they offer? When the trip over, I do take pictures of my grandkids and my german shepherds, which is not always easy if that helps! LOL

Deb, you can't go wrong with either but for your needs I would go with the 5500 with the kit lenses or buy the body only with a single lens that is wide and long enough to take the photos yo like to take- the 16-85 would probably do quite well. ;)

I own a D5100 and I love it. If you are trying to decide between a D5500 and a D7200 I recommend that you go to a store (Costco, Best Buy, a local camera shop if you have one) and handle both of them. Look at how the camera feels in your hands, do the various button locations make sense to you, which one do you feel comfortable with?

They are both excellent cameras witht he D7200 have a few for professional features. BUT, that comes with the penalities of being slightly larger, being heavier, and costing more. The D550 has an articulating screen on the back, that's an advantage for low shots and high shots.

You will get many other recommendations but you seem to be set on Nikon so forget the other brands.

As far a lenses go, sometimes the D7200 is bundled with a 18-140 mm lens. I have one and I love it. It is an excellent walk around lens. I also have a 18 - 50 mm lens with I seldom use any more, and a 50 - 300 mm lens that I use when I need the extra reach.

The D7200 have much more to offer than the D5500. It is Nikon's flagship APS-C camera and considered by many independent reviewers to be the best cropped sensor camera on the market.

One advantage the D5500 has for vacation trips is that it is a smaller DSLR than the D7200. As far as the lens, you shouldn't need a large zoom. Walking around Disney, everything is right in front of you. You can get the 18-55mm kit lens with the camera and crop the photo's you want to get closer with. Have a good trip.

The difference between they is of $ 400, the D7200 shuter speed is 1/8000 and D5500 is only 1/4000, but the 5500 is fully articulated LCD...........The D7200 is expandable ISO....

For his use it is sufficient the 5500, but if your pocket allows it............buy the D7200 .-

The lens, one travel with stabilizer, one Tamron 16-300 Di II VC PZD, I buy one for mi Canon...........

And remember, one good flash and one high speed card .-

Good luck

Here is a snap shot of the two.

Personally I would go with the 15-140 MM lens as mentioned above, it gets you in close with the 140 MM and allows you to be in close with the 18mm.

As far as the camera goes, the weight will be your primary concern if it's going to be around your neck all day. The lens isn't the lightest and along with the body of camera.

As far as cropping, well that speaks for it's self. If you don't need to crop or cut the photo in half then don't. You might as well get a Good PS if your going to be cropping more then 50 percent in my opinion.

If you settle for the 5500, you will soon wish you had bought the 7200.

One difference easy to see when handling both, is the brighter viewfinder of the D7200 (solid glass pentaprism) compared to the D5500 (mirror pentaprism). Most noticeable in low light situations. Solid glass pentaprism and magnesium frame result in more weight of the D7200.

After walking around a crowded park for days, the opposite is also true...if the poster settles for a D7200 he/she would probably wished for the D5500. The D7200 is an awesome camera but not so great if you have to carry it around all day. I don't think people realize how much larger and heavier the D7200 is than the D5500. The big advantage of the D7200 is the photographer has quick and easy access to different settings, if the photographer likes to change settings with each and every photo. To me, the main reason in this case should be size and weight for travel, and image quality is between the two is about the same.

I doubt that you can tell the different in image quality between the D5500 and the D7200.
With that said the D7200 is easier to use because it has 2 wheels instead of 1. It's faster than the D5500. It can focus lenses that are not AF-S. It can meter with old AI manual focus lenses.
To me the 2 wheels alone would make me pick the D7200.
