A very Happy Samhain to all my friends here.
I hope your harvest has been bountiful and you have fuel for winter.
The Sun God dies tonight, he will be reborn at Yule.
Have a great time everyone.

It is part of both Green, Gaelic, it was the forerunner of Halloween (or All Hallows) Halloween was taken to america by Celtic Irish and has since been expanded and pimped up to what it is today. It most certainly preceded cristianity.

Of course, it was Ostara, (there are varied spellings for most Pagan words) and Yule became xmas.
America also 'created' Mother's Day etc. It is so people spend money thro' guilt!

I think the pagans created half the holidays... and Hallmark created the rest.

I think you are only correct!
Cristianity had to adapt somewhat, so they took over Pagan festivals, just as in Africa, where they had to accept the people's beliefs in their own GodS.

What is the Gaelic meaning of Samhain? Ireland is one of the coolest places I have ever visited. The people are extremely friendly and kind to strangers one and all.

It was the Celtic Pagan origin of Halloween (or All Hallows) Mike.
You are right about the 'Paddies' wonderful, hospitable, comical and friendly people and a beautiful country too.

Thanks for the info! I'll have to look in my copy of Frazer's The Golden Bough to see if Samhain is covered.

Its really sad that so many Christian denominations have ignored the Christian aspect of Halloween. This gives the history: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halloween

The book has been around quite a while http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Golden_Bough It should remind us of the richness of cultures other than our own, other than Judeo/Christian, and of the ancient sources of much of today's culture.
