Very nice shot Bob, and it was nice of him (?) to cooperate by visiting a part of the bush that is easy to photograph. We have them too, but are frequently between bushes and not really open for good shots.

Glad you came by! The male Monarch has the two fattened segments of the veins (one on each of the wings closer to the body), a feature not present in the females. I usually see numerous Monarchs in their migratory flights (a bit higher than the mature trees) during October here in Maryland but I have not been out enough to catch them this year. They are much more cooperative earlier, during mid-summer, around here. The fattened segment is a scent gland.
