A couple of weeks ago, I came across this newly hatched male Monarch feeding on the waning blooms of a butterfly bush in my yard. The recent emergence of this Monarch is evident in the lingering folds of his wings that have not had time to fully open as well as the undamaged wing edges. Reading tells me that this one will make the migratory trip south and will breed when he gets there...but that he will die there and that the returning Monarchs will be made up of later generations that have never made the trip. I am always amazed at their abilities!

I saw very few this year but I hope that was due to my reduced time in the yard and not a reduction in their numbers.
Thanks for coming by and for your comments!
