I've developed a "solution" that handles part of that - differentiating edges from the rest of the petal. My solution uses Topaz Simplify to create a black on white drawing which I create in a new layer, then blend with the original using the Mulitply blending mode, then using the opacity slider until I get just a hint of edge (around 20% or so). I can upload one of your flowers with this effect if you'd like. And if you happen to like it, I could write a few paragraphs on how to create it for yourself.

Another solution I've seen is finding a program that creates a "Cartoon" effect (which usually beefs up edges and creates some texture in the flat areas), then blend those two together.

Go for it Bob, I'm interested in seeing what you've done...

It's probably subtle, but that's the way I like to start out. This was blended at 20% so if I went to 100, the edges would be blacker and thicker. The outlining also adds some details to the striations in the leaf petals as well. To be truthful though, I think this happens anytime you have dark colors, no matter what hue. Deep blue or purple would probably do the same thing.

Yes, a slight improvement, thanks Bob...
I just shot these with a CP filter...a bit more definition but it's a very dull overcast day here so it might work better with a bit more light...

Your second shot seems to be the best. Have you ever tried using a little fill-flash it works wonders.. Keep shooting

That's an option Steve but I wonder if it would wash the colour out too much...I'm already having issues with the true colour...with most reds and dark maroons, they come out too light..
I'll try some fill and see what happens... :D

Topaz Simplify>Cartoon by D, Pachero does just that. You can tweak it until just the edges are enhanced so the cartoon effect is minimized. I often do it with colored leaves because they seem to blend together.

Flowers are a difficult subject for me, the top 3 are excellent, full color with no shadows. I like these shots.

I prefer the composition in image 4 I find round flowers shot straight in are like shooting bullseyes

I propose Fill Flash as the answer.

I'd set the flash A stop less than the sunlight area

If you balance the flash the image will likely be a bit flat
Also dependent upon the angle at which you shoot you might have to get the flash off the camera or the pedals may create some interior shadows

Ron, I also have hassles with red flowers--usually loss of edges/detail &/or over saturation. I have largely fixed it by under exposing & then regaining it (if necessary) in PP. When shooting red flowers, I always set my EV to (-) .7, or even (-) 1.0. I find this helps tremendously. Earl. :-)

I agree with DOOK! Under exposing reds, plus a little sharpening, has helped me.

Bob, if you wouldn't mind, I would be thrilled how to do this. I don't understand blending and I use Topaz. Thanks so much.

This is not about the composition but the difficulties shooting red flowers...
