I always have problems with red flowers...is there a better way of taking shots of them...a filter maybe..?
These are three shots of the same rose...and one of a dark maroon rose...

You really need to see it to appreciate how dark this rose actually was..

I must be missing something Ron. These look perfectly good to my old eyes. What is that you think could be done better?

Red color has always been a problem for all cameras, especially Nikons. It has to do with gamma calibration.

Hi Bob, you really need to see the rose to understand what I'm getting at...they just don't show it as it really is...it's like each petal merges and makes the shot look blurry...if only the red ones were like this...

Tried playing around with gamma setting in PP but they still have the same "blurry" appearance..?

This takes place in camera and.. well there is little you can do as it is determined by engineers who think they know better.

There is very little we can do except is shoot raw to mitigate the influence.

PP can correct it (even in a JPG but it will more difficult).

Is there any sort of filter that might help...?

I entered the first rose in PS and increased Brightness and Contrast by +20 each. Made a lot of difference.

Ron I believe your problem is the lighting and the time of day your taking your images.
Here is a link to a red flower taken with a Nikon D300, all the data included.shot in 14 bit raw.

The rose was in the shade as was I so I thought it would be OK...the time was well past midday, it was just after 4pm...

Ron, I also have hassles with red flowers--usually loss of edges/detail &/or over saturation. I have largely fixed it by under exposing & then regaining it (if necessary) in PP. When shooting red flowers, I always set my EV to (-) .7, or even (-) 1.0. I find this helps tremendously. Earl. :-)

I've developed a "solution" that handles part of that - differentiating edges from the rest of the petal. My solution uses Topaz Simplify to create a black on white drawing which I create in a new layer, then blend with the original using the Mulitply blending mode, then using the opacity slider until I get just a hint of edge (around 20% or so). I can upload one of your flowers with this effect if you'd like. And if you happen to like it, I could write a few paragraphs on how to create it for yourself.

Another solution I've seen is finding a program that creates a "Cartoon" effect (which usually beefs up edges and creates some texture in the flat areas), then blend those two together.
