After Cdouthitt mentioned a few days ago, that there is a new firmware version in the works for the E-M1, I first went looking on the internet, found the info and think it is a must-have version.

2. I phoned the local camerashop, I put my camera's USB cable in a safe place... fortunately they had it in stock!

3. upgrade the camera to the current firmware. It was still on version 1.0 !!! What with stormy weather & thunderstorms, vacations, procrastination, but mostly the warnings about updating firmware and making sure the camera doesn't shut down during the process...
Sure, I'll admit it: I wasn't comfortable about upgrading the firmware.
Then, on Saturday: nice weather, no rush, newly charged battery, checked everything three times then started to follow the instructions. Up pops a screen saying something like "Your computer cannot communicate with your camera." Checked everything again... oops, camera not turned on, did that.... Wouldn't you know it - same message!
(I now wonder, because somewhere I saw a mention of Internet Explorer, if Firefox was the culprit.... In any case, clicked Exit and took everything from the desktop to the laptop. Not five minutes later, my camera gave me the new version number, I think it said 3.1 but may have been 3.0. I'm still sitting here, asking myself what I was so afraid of.

4. Sent an e-mail to Gary Friedman, because considering the list of new features, I would like his update to the E-M1 book as well. His reply:
"...but the person who is handling the Olympus titles for me has had some health problems, and I'm completely out of time, having just released my 2nd book in three months and I'm about to travel for four weeks. So the answer is "no plans right now, but watch the blog for changes in that strategy."

5. Went to the sundeck to take some pictures, make sure everything worked the way it should. And by golly, was what I saw in the viewfinder blurry, even AF didn't fix it... till I realized I still had the glasses on that I use with the desktop computer.

Well, live and learn, I guess. When version 4 of the firmware is released I will not be waiting as long to install it, and am hoping that Olympus will put decent literature to explain it all !

PS - to help with the procrastination part, I made this little gadget, you can find it under Links and Resources, same title as this thread.

My mother had one of these in a pot holder that hung on her stove.

Viewfinders...I still say the LCD live view screen is the best advancement in cameras ever, because I use it more than any other feature other than the shutter release button!

In this case, I'm afraid it made no difference: I had the wrong glasses on!
The dioptre is set for my everyday-all-day glasses, but because I had just been working with the desktop, I still had the glasses on that I use there.

To me, the EVF has been the best advancement in cameras ever. I cannot hold the camera a foot or more in front of me without adding considerable shake, whereas when using the viewfinder, I can tuck in my elbows and arms, and press the camera against my face, and add considerable stability that way. Taking a photo at a speed of 1/30 second using the live screen is impossible for me, I have to have at least 1/150 second or faster to get a sharp photo.
An added advantage, although I think the LCD screen does this as well, is that in the EVF I can see the changes happening, if for example I close or open the aperture. Not so with an OVF.
But in the end, you and I and everybody else have to decide what parts of our cameras we use, and how we use them.
For now, I'm looking through what I can do with the new firmware I just installed. AND I'm looking forward to the next upgrade of firmware: there will be both a focus stacking and a focus bracketing feature! Plus some other neat stuff. Was I ever wrong when with graduating from High School, I thought I was finished learning. I learned more since leaving school than I ever did while attending school, and the learning is still ongoing, some 50+ years later.

When I bought my E-M1 two months ago the salesperson at Camera World stressed not misplacing the USB cable as it is essential for the firmware updates. So, I labeled it and put it in a safe place. I've been reading about the firmware update for the E-M1 coming out next month and look forward to loading it and playing with the focus bracketing. However, I now have to remember where I stored m USB cable in that safe place. Earl

Oh, yes, safe place....
What I did about a year ago, was to get a box of ziplock (sandwich size) baggies, a roll of packing tape (the type that has glass fibre strings running in it, lengthwise - it is strong and will last), a permanent marker and a large plactic box.
I take a 4" piece of the tape and put it on a cable, electrical cord, etc, so I have a 2" tag. With the permanent marker I write what the cable or cord is for, then put it in a ziplock baggy. All the baggies are in the plastic box.
For vacations etc., I take the baggies I need, and return them to box as soon as we're home again.
I still haven't found the "safe place" of my camera's cable, but the new one, needed for the firmware download, is already residing in its own baggy in the box.

If you move into your RV, you minimize the places you have to look, but, .... Oh Well!!!

I began my minimal life style in 1987, moving into smaller and smaller spaces. Moved to Cincinnati with one car load of possessions. Moved back to Oregon five years later, still with one carload of gear and possessions.

Studio apartments since then, and now living in 32X8 feet. Lost one of my camera bags (of two) last week for four days.

It's not the space. It's the Brain. But I know where my cable is for firmware updates on my Oly's.

A better plan yet, is to buy a new camera to get the firmware updates. Whenever I buy a camera on eBay, I "contact the seller" and ask if the Firmware is up to date, and what version?

Works for me.
