No, you are wrong, both are improving, but the phone technology is improving much faster than camera technology, therefore the phones are catching up :-D

I'm wrong about the assumption? I don't think so.

Not that it can't happen or won't happen but I think we have camera people and phone people trying to put each other down. I started in technology when a computer filled a room and had to be kept at 50 degrees and the keyboard had to be attached to the computer cabinet. That computer had the capability of an HP calculator that came out about 7 years later. Never say never, no matter which side you are arguing for.

I stand prepared.. How about YOU?

If noting else to get the Last Shot On Earth.

Well, now Microsoft has showed today what new tools they are launching. This rumored Lumia 1030 was not one of them. So maybe it will come later or never.

But on the other hand they introduced a very interesting hybrid of laptop and tablet, the Surface book, which they claim to be the most powerful laptop ever made. And I must admit I find it interesting. This could be the best non customised laptop for photo editing launched yet.

err... Most powerful laptop? NOT from Microsoft, sorry. THAT I can prove looking at the one I have (and it is not with the maximal specs which would cost about 6k more than what I paid)

As to canned 'laptop' (non customized) MS is usually far behind despite their claims.

Thanks for this. I have seen here before that you have a lot of knowledge about computers. I am actually getting a bit tired of the setup I have and could easily be fooled to invest in something more expensive than needed. Am I correct that you had a "recipe" here for a good laptop or pc for photo work? If you are willing to share what you would recommend today for someone who wants almost the best I would not mind to get that recipe

And by the way, I have already bought me a 4K monitor with display port and was planing to find me a laptop or something to use with it in the next 2-3 months.

What you want and WILL pay for :hunf:

A medium of the road CPU 2.9~3.2 anything above adds K$$
RAM anything => 16GB (DDR3, DDR4 ~ available ~ will cause you to sell all your cameras and your first born)
MS2 drives (these do not use any power) size from 128GB to 500GB
SSD Drive (just about the same size)
Graphic card(s) should be at least 4GB DDR5 the one I have can drive 3 additional monitors through a 1 UDMI and 2 Mini UDMI ports for a total of 4 displays!!!

Connections:
4 USB 3.1, Optical sound output, regular sound (headphone/microphone)
Connectivity:
Ethernet, Wireless, Blue tooth
Other:
Blue-ray (acts also as DVD-R), memory card reader, integrated camera

Base price for a shell as per the "foot note" Around 3k.

Best bet, in my opinion. is to purchase a gaming laptop* shell from MSI with a minimal options and upgrade as you go, that way you can save up to 30% of the 'customized rigs'.

----
* Info
CPU is fixed so you must make a hard choice.
RAM should be user up-gradable make sure how many slots are in there and that you maximize the first slot and nothing on the others. (Many customization outfits will put cheaper sticks in there. The result being that when you push the memory up you lose what was installed so... A requirement (only one stick) not an option here.
Graphic cards come in many type and flavors. I selected to have two cards installed with 6GB DDR5 graphic memory. That way while it is user up-gradable I did not have to deal with the cooling and other side issues like cabling (I have clumsy fingers)
A Game rig can have up to 4 MS2 drives for a total of 2 TB (512x4). Getting a 128GB is best as even if you upgrade that drive to a 512 the cost of difference from the upgrade to pre install makes it worthwhile. These drives are basically SSDs but they are connected differently and significantly faster. Oh, for $19.00 you can purchase a MS2 drive PCIe adapter and use that 128gb MS2 drive as a scratch or temp drive for your PP software, tremendous speed gain here.
