Now there are rumors about a new 50 mpx sensor from Microsoft that will be announced this week and available soon in a Lumia 1030 smartphone. And talking about smartphones, their cameras are getting better with almost every new top model launch.

I have been using Nokia Lumia 1020 for 2 years now and still love the camera in it that is often close to a beginners dslr with a kit lens in image quality and zoom capability. And if those rumors about the Lumia 1030 and 50 mpx sensor are true and some other improvements will come with it this will be a very serious camera phone.

In your dreams. physical space is not there and the technology to create such a high resolution on a few mm is also absent at the moment.

You may be right for now but never say never; things change rapidly. Phones are gaining ground with every new release.

They already made a 41 mpx sensor 3-4 years ago so I would not worry too much about how impossible it will be to add a few extra megapixels now. That is not the most important thing in this case, but all the other improvements we are hoping for, like less shutter lag and faster image processing, better low light capabilities and more included camera functions. And of course it would be great if they would develop a lens with variable aperture and very compact optical zoom. That is actually the next big step in camera phones.

What is advertised is an image size, not a sensor size. There is a world of difference there. I followed your link and there is nothing that mentions the sensor size AND pixel density. I guess being laughed out of the room does not do when trying to sell something?

I think what you are waiting for is a camera with a built in phone.

Didn't Samsung try that a fews years ago....? I believe it flopped.

Until a phone has a sensor that can zoom mechanically rather than digitally, and has a sensor of any size close to that of respectable cameras...I can't see it worth the effort. I do use my phone's camera a good deal. But I don't expect it to perform as well as my real cameras for "printable" work. Internet portable shots? Sure - it can do that....

So, would you speak into the lens or into the viewfinder?

Don't laugh at me if you do not follow the technology news. But to help you a bit I can tell you that

1) I provided no link to support the rumor I was referring to.
2) The sensor size that is rumored is the same as in the more than 2 year old Lumia 1020, a 1/1.5 inch sensor or 8,64x6 mm. They might also be using a sensor that is a bit bigger 1/1.2 inch that was used in the Nokia pureview 808 (launched in Feb. 2012) that is an even older technology than in the Lumia 1020. But that sensor is bigger and could be upgraded to about 50 mpx with the same pixel density as in the 1/1.5 inch sensor.
3) In this case nothing is advertised yet, I am only discussing widespread rumors that many people expect to figure out if are true or not on October 6th, when Microsoft is supposed to be introducing their next smartphone models.

The phones I am talking about here have a lot bigger sensor than cameras like the Canon G7, the Canon powershot SX50 and SX60, the Nikon P900 (wish the P900 had that mobile phone sensor), Nikon P7800 and lot of other popular cameras. But of course this is a sensor that is also a lot smaller than CX, DX or FX sensors and M4/3. But it is quite remarkable that a small phone camera already has a sensor 50-100% larger than many popular bridge cameras and compact "quality" cameras like the Canon G7, Nikon P7800 and other cameras of similar kind.

Ah, I am not laughing at you. I am laughing at those publishing the tech rumors (and at the company the presenter obligated to sell this if it happens).

Otherwise you are correct'''
1) I did my own research and found a link that gave the 'rumored specs' and those made me... well... really suspicious of the technology involved, making pixels out of thin air (like the digital zooms do)
2) Such far no sensor has reach that level of sensel (4 for one pixel) density at the moment. It may come or a new technology may change the miniaturization game (like the 'well' pixel*)
3) Rumors it is indeed.

-----
* Basically the sensels are on top of each other and ordered in such a way that each 'layers' intercepts only one basic color frequency the others being stripped and the light goes deeper onto the pixel well.

What I find most interesting about those Lumia 1020 sensors is that they provide much better image quality than for example the Nikon P900, which is 16 mpx. Full size images from the Lumia 1020 are simply a whole lot better than full size images from the P900. I am only comparing those 2 because I have both. And there is not much difference visible when comparing pictures from the Lumia 1020 with pictures from a Nikon 1 J2 with CX sensor that I also have, and the difference is not always in favor of the Nikon. That is how good the Lumia 1020 sensor really is. And there fore people who are using this phone are really interested in how good a upgrade of it will be.

Did you check at the pixel level? This is where the difference is. If the pixels are bad you will get bad prints but a good display.

Check this post... Click on download and once the image is loaded click on it to see reality...

Yes, I am talking pixel level, that is where my P900 is not so good, but the Lumia 1020 is totally different and delivers really good quality pics.
