Neither of these two photographs are in focus, mainly because of long shutter duration. Also, this approximately 3-inch (75-mm) long fifth instar caterpillar does not fill your 36-mm wide sensor. This is a close-up photo, not a macro-photograph.

I'm realizing I need to get a ring light. Available light is just not enough.

I strongly advice against a ringlight. I tried that option a few years back (http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-32754-1.html#511426 ), but now use a 6x8-inch softbox diffuser on a standard speedlight for all of my hand-held macro-photography (http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-32754-1.html#511426 ). View several macro-illumination set-ups on pages 4, 5, & 6: http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-32754-4.html
