An interview with RGreenway,
1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I have been a photographer since childhood when I started with an Agfa rangefinder 35mm camera in the early 1960s'
2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I have taken several self-study courses and continue to do so. I am now taking Joels Santore's courses on the Great Courses series. I learned things that help from even the Fundamentals of Photography course!
3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
Many things that come together. Composition, lighting, focus and depth of field, and of course, the subject!
4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
I used a new camera, the Sony A7r II with 2 strobes, one small one on the camera, and a second larger positioned to the right. The camera was set to rear flash so the flashes tripped at the end of the 1 second exposure. It would have been bette if I had a studio backdrop, but I don't have access to one. The lens was a great 50mm prime by Zeiss, the Loxia f2. Manual focus was important to be sure the focus stayed where I wanted it. And a small aperture assured the dancers would be in good focus if they moved from the path they practiced. And of course, I took a lot for exposures to get one I liked!
5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
Import images in Adobe Lightroom. Minor exposure adjustment, and in this case, had to smudge out a clock in the background and a bright spot right above Sam's head!
6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
My wife is my best director and critic! She has great ideas for contest shots and helps me choose the best images.
7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
This would have been better with a darker dance studio, and if I had had a light in addition to the 2 flashes. I would have set up a light in a dark room to provide the streak affect with a black background, and the flashes would produce the clear image at the end.
8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
Not sure, I have been doing it for so long it is just a part of my life!
9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
An assortment of zoom and prime lenses. From 18mm prime to 500 tele.
10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
Depends on the shoot! I do a lot of ballroom dance photography and tend to use a 70-200 f4 zoom on my A7r, but also like a 90mm f2.8 and even the 24-70 zoom depending on how large the ballroom is and how close to the action I will be sitting or standing if walking around.
11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
Usually none! I use available light almost all of the time. I try to position people to get goo lighting on their faces. That's why this contest was so difficult for me, I am not that experienced with multiple flashes.
12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
Dance, dance, dance!
13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
Not that I can think of this early in the day!
14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
Have a photo sharing site on Smugmug. I don't charge for access or downloading. This is a hobby for me!
http://www.greenwayphotovideo.com15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
I find UH to be inspiring on many levels and try to do the contests every week. They are interesting, and thinking of ideas to shoot is fun for me and my wife. Then executing the shoot is also fun. All in all, this is helping me be a better photographer and I really enjoy and appreciate UH. I get some great jokes from the General Chit Chat postings!
