I have been looking for a Macro lens for my Canon T5i and found some of these on Ebay and was wanting some opinions on which would be the better lens. I mean as far as brand and all the fixings. I would appreciate some help on this guys and gals. I go to the best people to ask about this subject and that seems to always go to the people (hogs) that I trust the most. I need to know if the price is right and Bob Barker isn't around to tell me if the price is right. LOL.

Right off the bat the zoom lenses listed are not really macro lenses.
While they may focus close, they don't get into the macro 1:1 realm.
Misleading labeling.

Pass on the:

Sigma AF 18-50mm f2.8 DC EX Macro
TAMRON Macro Zoom Lens SP AF 28-75mm f/2.8

The Sigma 180 was well over $1000 when new, almost $600 used at B&H. The current version(f2.8) is $1600 or so new and is considered to be one of the sharpest lenses on the market (below the price of a used car).
The Tamron 60mm is a good price, but be aware that you will have some subjects inside the lens hood, do you like bugs that much?
The Tamron 90mm is about $450 new and the MkII with stabilization is about $750

Bushy,
You may also want to look at the Tokina 100mm f/2.8 AT-X M100 AF Pro D Macro. I have it in the Nikon mount and it's one of my favorite lenses.
B&H has it for $379.00

I'd recommend Douglass's advice. He's our resident expert in macro work.

I can't advise you about any of the lenses you listed--I use manufacturer lenses. But I would suggest you check B&H and KEH (www.keh.com) for used lenses for your camera before you buy. Both are reputable dealers which will allow you to buy an excellent used (and sometimes new) lens for a very good price.

Not on your list but should be: Tokina 100mm f2.8. I would put the sharpness of this lens up against any on your list and it has one feature that is really nice. The way to switch between auto focus and manual focus is to push or pull the focus ring. It makes it easy to auto focus then pull the ring back and tweak the focus for optimum results. You listed some longer macro lenses and I can tell you from experience they are not ideal in most cases. I have the Sigma 180 macro and it needs to be mounted on a tripod because it is heavy. Not a good option for following moving bugs etc. I think most people on this forum will tell you the 90mm to 105mm macro lenses are the most versatile and the best choice. If you are not familiar with Tokina, they are part of the Kinko family of lenses and products. Kinko is highly respected for their products and have made lenses not only for their own Tokina label, but for other vendors including some of the name brands you would be more familiar with.

Personally, I would get the Sigma 180mm .........The two Tamron macro primes are probably the best "buys" - but not by much.

I don't know anything about the quality of the Sigma lenses, (though Sigma lenses are generally well-thought of) but I highly recommend the longer focal lengths if you plan to do any insect photography. The longer focal lengths will do a better job of not scaring the insects. The narrower angle of view also gives better control of the background.

Canon 100mm 2.8 here = Fitted to either a 5D Mark II or a 7D. Works for me.

Got it used for 200 U.S.D. at my local camera shop = Schiller's Camera in STL, MO.

I am still in the learning phase of using it - But so far - Very good product.

Your list does not include any of the Canon EF, or EF-S lenses. The Canon EF 100mm 2.8, or the "L" version of the same lens, can be had for reasonable amounts on the used market, and are great lenses. The EF-S 60mm is made for the cropped sensor, as in your camera. Even the old 50mm f1.8 can be used for macro, using extension tubes, with good results. Try KEH.com, they have many of your macro used lenses.

Besides taking Douglass's advice and reading the provided links, along with other info you can find in the "True Macro" section, for a beginner, I suggest looking at the 90 to 105mm range. This range is far less difficult to use. The 180mm is great for working distance but, exaggerates any movement on your part and comes with it's own set of challenges. Using a tripod would help with this but, would be very limiting on what you can shoot. Very few of my peers ever use a tripod for their macro work.

Something like a 60mm gives you a very short minimum working distance, which can cause issues with lighting.

Also keep in mind that just because a lens has the word "macro" on it, does not make it a Macro lens. It's very misleading and a common misconception.

Bill :-)

++++++++++

I have also made use of the Minolta 50mm totally Manual lens. I have a Minolta adapter and extension tubes for that -- AS Well as a Bellows. With that "Minolta Method" I use either the 7D and or the 5D Mk II -- AND using the "Live View" I can focus very well with the X10 enlargement on the LCD.... (As You All May Know = The mirror is Up and does not drop, so no camera movement from the dropping of the mirror back to position.)

As a side note to my earlier post here the Canon 100mm / 2.8 Macro IS the Canon EF.
