To all the Veterans who are actually hogs. I recognize some of the Hogs are Vets by their byline or avatar. Rather than saying thanks to the few I can recognize I thought I would thank all the vets who are Hogs. If not for you none of us would be here talking about photos, etc. I chase you down in parking lots, restaurants, etc. when you may where a hat identifying yourself or still in uniform.

Thank You All for your service.

I was stationed and flew out of Adak in the aleutions and Elmendorf was our alternate if the frequent horrible weather at Adak prevented us from landing, even though it was over a thousand miles away! We loves Elemdorf because as an Air Force base it was much newer and better quarters than the old Navy barracks on Adak.

ADAK Alaska. 'bout 5 islands from end of the chain, not all that far from Russia...... with $.10 bottles of Schlitz. '56 - '57 era.

Installed TV station, [experienced from INSTALL of WMBV-TV, Marinette, Wi. . . 1953] Components for Adak [KDAK-TV] shipped from Dage TV Industries, Indiana. Recreation on ADAK: Shoot 2 foot to 4' long rats / 12 ga. shotguns while standing in back of pickup Chev. Next stop: em-club. Don't have any idea how many hundreds 6 of us shot....
TV station showed film of shows [2 weeks old] stateside TV. [Kodiak, Adak, Elmendorf Air Base] shared reels of tape. Hrs: 1600 hrs 'till 2200... Had one news cast that AFRTS [ARMED FORCES RADIO TELEVISION SERVICE] would teletype news to us. The staff would sit at a table while TV camera showed Navy personnel and dependents black/white TV.
plus show TV [reels of tape] Tommy - Jimmy Dorsey . . . etc. whatever was showing in U.S.A.
Next stop after ADAK..... sea of Japan. [Korea was across from Japan] Three trips a week, garbage had to be collected/dumped from USS Missouri flotilla. 2 Migs used our "barge" as a tow target. Yup.... Migs sunk it. We cut the tow cable . . . made it back to port, minus barge.

Thank you for your consideration. While a lot of you had your feet on the ground in Viet Nam doing the dirty work, I was playing pool on the USS Intrepid (CVS11), nah I am joking about playing pool. My thanks goes to all who served as well.

Thank you Greg. I'm proud to have served during the Viet Nam era even though I wasn't "in country". I'm so glad to see my fellow vets getting the recognition they deserve.

Thank you, Greg. And Thanks to all of you who have served, serve now or support those who serve or served. I was drafted while in college in 1952 and decided to forgo deferment. That was an easy decision to make because the national spirit of WWII was still an influence. Sorry to see that North Korea is still causing problems.
Last April I was invited to go on a Veteran's Honor Flight to Washington,DC The program is sponsored by Gold Star Mothers Chapters. I hope all of you veterans get that opportunity. It is an amazing experience. Nothing can compare to being at the Memorials, the National Mall and Arlington with a group of veterans. Our group filled an Airbus 320.
Each veteran was accompanied by a volunteer guardian. That would be an excellent way for you, Greg, and others like you to participate in an Honor Flight and share that deeply moving experience.

I was appalled when I read what you said about WWP, as we had donated money to them for years along with monthly boxes of food, books, magazines, personal products, etc. to our troops in Iraq & Afghanistan, and when my spouse of 49 years, Nam Vet, Bronze Star recipient, passed on we requested that all donations in lieu of flowers be made to WWP, and hundreds of people donated in his name.

I just googled Charity Navigator to see what they had to say and it looks like 59.9% of what WWP collects actually goes to the veterans, while a total of 40% is spent on administration and fundraising. According to some government figures I read years ago, if a charity spends more than 17% on administration and fund raising, don't donate to them. You can check it out here:

Good to know. Thank you for the research.
As a Lion I know it goes to charity as most internal funding for Lions is generated by dues etc.
I am skeptical of nearly all these new charities and old ones like the rip off Red Cross. Wanted to charge my dad, coming in from a combat mission against the japs, for a cup of coffee.

Erv,

I remember those days well. I did 3 tours and the baby killer name really hit me hard since I did destroy a Church up north.

Well guys,

You know the difference between the military and the Boy Scouts?

The Boy Scouts have adult leadership.
