Today's society wraps themselves around our Vets. This is good. Not sure how many of our under 30 population know about how the military was treated during the VN war. I do wonder if the same age adults that participated in the hatred, are somehow apologizing. I don't know any but would like to know if they feel the same way about us or have reconsidered.

I was in 'Nam 66-67 as an advisor to the Vietnamese 9th infantry division in the Mekong delta. I made many Vietnamese friends, and when South Vietnam was overrun by the North in 75, I learned that many of them suffered tremendously; some left as boat people and came to the US. I felt guilty about the US abandoning them and did not want to go back to visit when that became possible. My wife convinced me to do it, so a couple of years ago we did. We were well received, and had an interesting time. I was able to show my wife most of my old "haunts".

At any rate, we travel a lot, and most of my photography hobby consists of travel pictures which I organize into travelogues and present at senior centers, churches, etc. The shows seem to be popular, and am always invited back to present other shows. My Vietnam show includes images I took in '66 as a historical background. The show has been well received. Except for once. My home town is known in the area as "the people's republic". One nursing home's residents essentially called me a "baby killer" when I presented my Vietnam slides and never invited me back. So, the attitude is still lurking in the environment.

To all the Veterans who are actually hogs. I recognize some of the Hogs are Vets by their byline or avatar. Rather than saying thanks to the few I can recognize I thought I would thank all the vets who are Hogs. If not for you none of us would be here talking about photos, etc. I chase you down in parking lots, restaurants, etc. when you may where a hat identifying yourself or still in uniform.

Thank You All for your service.

Greg

Almost every story about viet nam brings tears. So, I will change the tone. We left the country from DaNang. We were to fly to Iwakuni Japan. When we were waiting to board the aircraft, some master sergeant said that our sea bags would be inspected and if contraband was found our departure may be delayed a day or two. Upon hearing this, I hid my seabag behind a hanger for fear that someone had stashed something in my seabag. When I got to Japan, I got in trouble for not having a uniform of the day. They issued me another and I returned to the world.

I'm a Navy vet and also an old guy. When I was in, nobody was shooting at me, so I don't feel I'm in the same class as those who experienced combat. I noticed a number of Vietnam vets on here so I thought I would share my webpages:

A lot of brothers from Vietnam service here. Thanks for standing up and coming home. I say welcome home to you all, nobody did back in the day. Coming home then was a day we all looked forward to but where shocked at the treatment we received then. Those people that hated us were lined up at the airports waiting for us to yell and spit at us. They picked the wrong targets. The real targets were in Washington DC. Still are.

Wow, I was a carrier sailor and was there in '66, '67. Either you relieved us (USS Kearsarge, CVS 33) or we relieved you on Yankee Station! I was ships company. (ETR 2).

some things I dont understand, and Jane Fondas' award (or whatever) is one of them../BK/
.BTW, I was giving to Wounded Warrior and found only 5% goes to guys, rest to executives!!!,I did some research, and was left with the Salvation Army and Lions. Lions won because they sent me a fruit cake one Xmas.
While I was aware of some mistreatment by the public, it never really made the news as it should have... hearing it here is interesting..,shameful, and then canonising Jane Fonda make me want to puke....Vietnam was a clusterfk, but solely and entirely the fault of Washington.... Ed

....and don't forget the media. THEY were the ones who truly altered the country's impression of what Nam was all about, and drummed it into peoples' heads on a nightly basis. The media and dumb politicians who didn't know enough to leave the tactical decisions to the military, lost the war, and it was a war, not a 'conflict' as they like to label it.

Greg, I'd like to add my personal thanks as well. Even though I'm a Vietnam era vet, I did not go over seas in the mid 60's. My active service expired 1 month before my 1st Infantry Division (Army) started transferring to Vietnam in 1963. I couldn't believe that many US citizen's (late 60's) had such a negative attitude about our military defending our country.
