Is it my imagination or are the problems with the 7D MK II becoming more frequent then in the beginning.? I was ready to pull the trigger and started reading the reviews on B&H. Much to my chagrin it appears that there are more negative reviews being posted now then when it was first released. I would have thought it should be the other way around. Any thoughts?

I don't read reader reviews. What are they saying?

Hi SS, they're saying that the camera does not produce sharp images, some have just broke after four hours of use. Most of these reviews have been written by "Pro" photographers. These are the reviews that you can find on any product by checking on the stars on the B&H site. When I'm looking at buying something new I always read what has been said. I don't pay too attention to the 5 star reports " Best thing since sliced bread" kind of reviews. However if there is a trend of reviews all pointing to the same problem then I try to do more research. What I am seeing is more unfavorable reports since about January or February this year then since the camera was first introduced. Maybe they're just selling more now.

I'd say the UHH population with 7DIIs in their hands is a representative population to correlate with B&H user comments. The issues I've noted are focusing issues where a firmware update was released almost immediately and more than one (several?) had their body replaced by Canon where the replacement fixed their issues. If there was a trend, that trend would be based on data since say June 2015 as the replacements and firmware changes were in the earlier months of 2015. The first shipments of the new model were arriving just before the holidays in 2014.

I know what you mean. It is frequently difficult to sift through the bull and dribble. But occasionally a kernel of wisdom surfaces, for example, if you did a review.

As an owner/buyer, who had problems initially with the 7D2, I will say that I am NOW extremely happy with the camera and the images it produces. My camera suffered from AF and "electronic adjustment" issues early on. Between the warranty repairs and firmware upgrades, it performs beautifully. I will admit I was very unhappy to have to deal with these issues after dropping $1800(not a little deal for me), but Canon's repair center on the east coast got things right, and was extremely quick in the turn-around. This all occurred 4-5 months ago, so that said, I would have to believe these reviews are either old, or about about older inventory.

I've had no problems with the 7D2 in the 6 months I've owned it and in fact purchased another 5 weeks ago so I would not have to keep changing lenses. If what you are shooting moves (i.e. wildlife, especially birds) this camera is incredible.

I also think that it is older inventory. Bought my first one early spring and ended up returning 4 until I kept the one I now have. The manager at the store where I do business took one out of inventory that had a more recent serial number figuring that the ones I had came from a bad batch as the serial numbers were close. No issues with the once I have now. Love it!

On the first page of reviews on the B&H site on this camera,7/14/2015 through 3/19/2015 for a total of six is of concern to me as there aren't that many bad reviews from that point all the way back to the first review. I've been very happy with all my Canon products and have been trying to clarify if this bad batch has been fixed.

Thanks, that's very encouraging, still shooting a 5D MK II and a 7D.

Bought mine in March 2015. Nothing but high praise from me on this camera. Have you looked it up on Utube? I have only found excellent reviews there from high end pros. Take a look.

I am sure there are some "bad copies" of the camera out there, like Travis unfortunately got. And, yeah, there may even be some "bad batches" that don't get caught by quality control.

However, with a rather complex, relatively pro-oriented camera like 7DII, I'd wager that 9 out of 10 "camera problems" are no fault of the camera at all, but are the user doing something wrong.

I wonder if all the user reviews by "pros" on B&H are posted by the same "pros" I see advertising on my local Craiglist (there were 700 wannabe pro photographer ads, the last time I took the time to count them).

I don't have a 7D II yet but will be getting a pair of them soon (I try not to be an "early adopter" of gear, software etc... let someone else work out the inevitable bugs). But having shot with a lot of Canon gear for 15 years (currently mostly with a pair of 7Ds and 5DII, like you RRS), I can tell you that if there is a problem with it, you can rest assured they will make it right very quickly. Canon has some of the best follow-up customer service and warranty repair in the industry.
