Canon 6D…How does it perform shooting sports?

I currently have a Canon 7D. I'm considering buying a Canon 6D. I've always wanted a full frame camera (Image Quality) and the the excellent high ISO performance you get with FF cameras.

I have a good lens. Canon 70-200mm 2.8 IS. I plan on shooting football, soccer and indoor basketball and volleyball.

I'm curious as to how fast this camera will focus on moving players and how well it locks on to moving players? Focusing speed and ability to lock on are my concerns. Thanks for any input!

:) :)

I have the 6D and 7DII. I got the 7DII for birds and other moving things. The 6D takes great images, and does well in low light. But the focus is geared to landscape, macro (center point) and other non moving subjects. You can get good action shots by using the old pre AF techniques of prefocus, makeing use of DOF and timing. But if you are totally used to AF you will have a fairly steep learning curve. You can of course use center point AF and practice keeping the point on the subject at all times. For me that would be harder than the prefocus, DOF and timing method.

Since the price of a 5DIII is now down below what I paid for my 6D I would say go for a 5DIII, its AF is not as good as the 7DII but is leagues ahead of the 6D, or the 7D. However the 5DIII is a tad behind the 6D in low light, but way ahead of the 7D. And of course it is 22mp vs the 20mp of the 6D.

Also with FF that 70-200 will really be a 70-200, not a 112-320 eqv image.

I've heard the 7D II is really good and has improved high ISO performance over the 7D. Maybe I'll go that route. I really don't want to lose the AF ability for sports. I was afraid the 6D was not nearly as good as the 7D in that category.

Or maybe I'll save up for the 5DIII! Sounds like a really nice camera. Thanks for the advice and information robertjeri! :D

Toast, the 6 will not shoot sports as well as your 7. But what it does get will be way better than the shots produced by the 7. The 6 is a stripped down but more updated than the 5ll. I've shot a TON of sports with the 5ll. Like the 5, the 6 only has one cross-point, but it's more sensitive. So don't let anybody kid you, its not a sports camera but it will definately shoot sports, but there ARE better choices!!
I too now shoot sports with a 7ll over the 5lll because of the more reach for the same lens. If the reach is not a factor, like for birds, the 5lll is the better camera for most things where the really high fps is not needed. I rarely shoot my 7ll at high fps since I get better focus at the lower fps but it's tgere if you need it!!
I also believe(not sure) that the 5lll will spot meter on any focus point it is focusing with, a-la 1dx. The 7ll definately does not! And that's a big deal.
If you do birds, the 7ll is it. If not, I'd go with a 5lll. Both will out perform your 7mkl in every catagory(except fps).
Also somewhat important, the the 7ll does have REAL weather-sealing! I've shot mine being careful in open hard rain without a prophylactic with no ill effects. Awsome!!! Good luck

I have the 6D and I love it, however........I am on the verge of buying a 7dII.
Trying to acquire focus on moving objects and track them is frustrating. Not the 6D's strength.
Based on what I've read, the 7DII does fairly well up to 1600 ISO. With that and your fast lens you should be good to go.
Also...the narrower field of view of the 7DII should prove to be a plus.

Based on your experience, what do you consider the ceiling ISO on the 7DII?
I have the 6D and consider a well exposed 6400 ISO shot to be fairly acceptable.

Very interesting and I will consider everything. I've read this three times and will a couple more. haha I'm honestly not familiar with spot metering. How does this effect the picture I get? Does it have something to do with how light or dark the picture will be? thanks so much!

My grand daughter did HS swimming. I used a 60D for several seasons before receiving an injury. Last holiday I added a 6D with EF 24-105L, Tokina f/2.8 16-28. I was looking to beef-up my scenic/nature. I still value my 60D and think I have if not best of all world, certainly a great mix.

If I were to upgrade sports I would go to 7D Mii/EF 100-400/1.4TC.

Are you to keep the 7D?

As has been reviewed the 6D is not a robust shooter with a AF not as well suited to sports/action. But, the 6D will yield some great capture.

The 5D MK III does not spot meter on any point except the center. I keep hoping that they will change that in a firmware update. I guess they need to have something that would make a person buy the 1DX.

Here is a link comparing the AF system in the 1DX, 5DIII, and 7DII. http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Comparisons/Canon-EOS-7D-II-1D-X-5D-III-AF-Comparison.aspx

I am a bit confused. You want to shoot sports and think you need a camera that automatically focuses quickly. If memory serves one is following a player through the viewfinder and one takes one shot at a time. I would put the camera on manual and pan on a player and constantly focus as s/he moves. Of course, I learned to shoot without auto focus.

Shooting sports requires you intimately know the sport and are able to predict most of the time what is going to happen before it happens. That is what great sports photographers do.

More than autofocus you need the right lens for the light provided so that you can adjust your aperture, speed and ISO to get a shot.

fyi, I shot this Saturday night with the 7D MII at the Sacramento United Soccer League game at the very poorly lit Bonney Field. My goal was to push the ISO as high as I could and this was shot at 16,000, using the Canon 70-200 2.8 IS II. I had the 7D and the MII is much better.

Thank, looks a lot better then I get with the 7D. The acquisition of the 7D II looks more promising.
