An interview with mffox,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
35 years ago on a trip to Yellowstone I took a chance shot of the Tetons which is still my favorite and hangs on my office wall. I was hooked. Started getting serious 5 years ago.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
No formal training, just a few good books and websites, and UHH.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
Composition and simplicity, and "knowing" when your subject matter is really great.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
Olympus OMD EM10 with 14-44mm lens. Monopod, AP setting. I shot in RAW+JPEG. I took 6-7 shots from different perspectives. I was going move on, until the 2 strollers entered the scene, and I knew that was THE image I wanted.

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
I use Paint Shop Pro, mostly for exposure correction, then blemish removal if needed, then straightening and cropping.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
I shoot what I think is interesting and beautiful, particularly when we travel. We were on a river cruise of the Rhine and Danube. Last Sunday was a "free day" in Heidelburg, I thought the street scene was beautiful. The couple strolling into the scene was a bonus.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
The washed out sky.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
The value of patience, of taking one's time.

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
My monopod.

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
I find the M. Zuiko 40-150mm the most versatile for a range of shooting circumstances..

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
None.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
At age 78 I'm still deeply engaged in charitable work, golf, kayaking and writing. Travel without photography would cease to be a priority.

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
Not really.

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
I'm working on it.but not there yet.

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
A photographer friend once told me" go out into your back yard, draw an imaginary circle with a 10-ft. radius, and shoot a roll of film without duplicating anything." Look for the not-so-obvious, be patient with us rank amateurs, go easy on the post-processing, even though it's a lot of fun..

An interview with dsherwood3,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I have always liked taking vacation and family snapshots but when I retired a few years ago, I wanted to get more serious about taking photography to a higher level. I had no idea it wasn't just snapping the button.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
No formal training. I started reading books (Bryan Peterson's Understanding Exposure) and looking up "how tos" on the Internet. That's how I came across The Ugly Hedgehog. I have gained so much knowledge from this forum. Since I have only been serious about photography for a few years, I take photos of most anything catches my eye. I practice at the local botanical gardens and a local park with a lake.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
It's uniqueness, clarity, and composition. So many good photographers on this forum and I am better because of them.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
My camera is a Nikon 5300 and the Tamron 16-300 mm. This is my walk around gear. I also have the Tamron 159-600 mm lens ( must use a tripod with that lens; too heavy). There wasn't much of a setup taking this photo. I had passed by these mailboxes a few months ago but couldn't stop to take any photos. When I could, I went back. The weather was perfect. I liked the line of mailboxes and the road that kept going. The car on the road was a bonus.

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
I do post process with Topaz plugins. Mostly I just try to enhance what's there. Sometimes I will go further and experiment with Simplify.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
By now you gave most likely guessed the Ugly Hedgehog members are my inspiration. They make me want to do better. I think I am better but so far from where I want to be.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
I really like the photo as is. I circled the mailboxes and take shot different angles. It was the road leading into the horizon that made me happy with this photo. And the sky and lighting.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
How to use the camera with all its bells and whistles and not just Auto. That's how I came across this forum, and the people who work in a local photography store that are so helpful.

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
It would be my tripod.

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
I did chose just one lens and that's the Tamron 16-300. I wanted a walk around lens and I am very happy with it. I could spend so much money on camera gear but wanted to keep it simple. I also have the Canon SX 50.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
Just the flash on the camera.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
At this point in my life I really don't know. I love to travel but you can't travel everyday. I also read a lot. When the grandchildren were younger, I was with them more. But with my camera I do a lot of walking so it's more than just snapping a picture. I still snap pictures though.

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
The only funny thing I can say is I have fallen quite a few times but have always saved the camera. And the only reason I say it's funny is because my only thought while going down is, "save the camera".

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
I just post photos on my Facebook page. I haven't worked up the courage to post on UHH yet. Getting there.

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
Bryan Peterson's "Understanding Exposure" and keep practicing. Actually this question should be, "what advice can you give me?
Thank you UHH. I read this forum every day.
