I think I'm sticking with what Jim said...algae! He said if comes from still or stagnant water, and the lake a Peace Valley is certainly still. Thanks for looking, Bob!

They're so cute, aren't they, Michael? Even with the algae on their backs! They're friendly, too; they look right up at the people standing on the bridge above them! Thanks for looking!

Probably just mud and some slime, Sue. Their is much less coating on those residing in clearer waters.

Everybody knows that they squirt mud on their backs to keep the mosquito's and flies from biting them. Geez.

We spent the afternoon at Peace Valley Park and hit an off day as far as seeing birds, but we did see turtles. In the first two, can anyone tell us what's on their shells? Looks like fungus or something! YUK!

About 3 years ago my wife called me out to the yard to check out a sizable turtle that was crossing our lawn area. He was packed with mud on top of his shell!! Like a couple of inches of "yuk"!! Apparently he was working his way from the wooded area where a stream flowed back over to the lake. She decided to help him so attempted to pick him up & as she did he jolted & a bunch of the dried mud flew off. Somewhere I have a picture of that moment. I wonder just where it is???? Bob
