Jets. RAF Red Arrows at Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton Air Day. 11 July 2015. Not the best cloud cover for an air day but last year we left early because it was too hot! Canon EOS 600 with 70-300mm lens at 170mm. 1/1000 sec, f/11 -1 step. ISO 100. The aircraft are great, the after show reunion is full on.

An interview with RogueStorm,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I've only just got back into photography now that the digital age has come about, probably about two years. I had a few film cameras in my time and had a job in the Royal Navy that required a camera but nothing serious.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I have no formal training, self taught mainly. I subscribe to one photo mag, Digital Photo, and get tips along the way. Incidentally, DP magazine have featured one of my pics in their magazine this month (August), more about what you can do with PSE rather than a good photo but it's in there none the less.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
Clarity and colour.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
I have a Canon 600d, on the day in question I was using my 70-300. It was fairly cloudy and 'The Reds' came straight towards me. I was back zooming on the fly and caught them just before they dispersed.

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
I always shoot in RAW and do my editing in PSE11. There is no particular process other than the make them look as good as possible. I often revisit the RAW after having a look at the finished article.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
I have a good friend, not seen for a few years who does some great stuff with seascapes, if I could get half as good I'd be happy. I'm willing to take inspiration as and when I find it. For my photo, I was in the right place at the right time on a cloudy Air Day.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
Go back to last year when the sky was cloudless.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
The triangle. Getting that sorted has really helped.

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
I bought a mini tripod made by Ricoh in 1983 in Singapore. It has three uses, tripod being one of them and it is surprisingly firm. It also clamps onto a half wound car window and the third, it acts as a grip.

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
My kit lens (18-55) is probably the one I use the most, if given the choice I'd go for a wider range, say the 18-200.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
I have, obviously, the on camera flash but in the bag is a Yongnuo Speedlite YN560-III. I don't have any reflectors or such.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
Golf, but if you mean for a living, write.

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
I was in the Royal Navy used to work for a military organisation called JACIG, the British equivalent of the U.S. OSIA(E). We were responsible to the CFE treaty and arms reduction among other stuff. I had a Nikon F1 and went all over Eastern Europe taking photos of soviet conventional weaponry. We were invited!

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
No, other than what I post on here and FB, I don't have a web site or such.

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
Keep at it, learn and teach.

An interview with ofwiah,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I have been taking photos for around 40 years. I always loved a good photograph and that is what got me started.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I have no formal training. I am self-taught. I love all kinds of photography and will try to take a picture of anything that catches my eye.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
I believe composition and stand out color and sharpness makes a good for a good photograph

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
I use a Canon t2i digital camera with a Tamron 16-300mmf/3.5-6.3 lens.
I used a Canon speedlite 430 EXII flash to take my picture.
No special setup. I placed my camera on a tripod. I used a shutter release to take the picture after I got the exposure right. I than post-processed the final picture.

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
I do post process some of my images. I use photoshop elements 13. I start downloading my JPEG file into ps raw. Normally I will tweek the following: Shadows, highlights, contrast and in that order. I will open the file in ps elements and resize the picture and than sharpen the photo if needed.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
I cannot point to anyone that has influenced my photography. I am on a continuous self-study course to improve on what I do. What inspired me to take this photo was the subject matter. I am a Christian and I use to make a lot of the Jesus crossed to sell. When your letter "J" came up I knew immediately the picture that I was going to submit. I felt that a black and white rendition would enhance the old rugged cross look. Also this gave me an opportunity to get Jesus out among some of my photography friends.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
I would not change anything about my photo.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
Wow. I wish I had known a lot more of everything. My first DSLR camera is the one that I am using know. I bought it in 2010. I have used nothing but point and shoot cameras until that time. I purchased ps elements 9 when that came out. I studied a few of the books written on ps elements. I shot a lot and I tweaked a lot until I reached the results that I was looking for. I am still studing.

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
My monopod.

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
I would love to have the tamron 150-600 telephoto lens. I love shooting moving objects. However, after say that the lens that I am using at this time is the one that I have chosen to use. That lens is my tamron 16-300 lens. It is a great walk around lens. I don't have to carry but one lens to do the majority of my shooting.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
The lighting equipment that I use is the Canon speedlite 430EXII. That's it other than natural light.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
I love to travel. I find that to be really relaxing. I never get tired of driving.

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
I guess one of my more interesting stories would be that I just had a local professional photographer ask me for advice. I was pleased with that.

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
Not at this time.

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
The only advice that I have is to love what you are doing. Shoot a lot. Study your work and think of ways on how to improve your skills
Also, be careful on who you listen too. Some folks are out to do you more harm than good.
