I mostly shoot trains-primarily around the southeast-some locations, by virtue of the work to get to them, will keep themselves a secret. On the otherhand, I also shoot with GPS active so that I explain to others where I was at, which brings another point: if you are a "GPS shooter", unless you strip the EXIF data from the photo, then the secret is out. Canon's Map Utility program does a wonderful job of mapping out your locations.

I read an article last night about keeping your favorite photo locations secret, rather than publishing them along with the images. The idea is to keep tourists away and to prevent other photographers from horning in on your favorite photo spot. I'd post the link, but that site isn't allowed on UHH - "too much self-promotion by Vanelli."
I've never been inclined to keep a photo location secret. How about you?
Me either. If someone wants to go to the site where I captured a great photo and get one of their own. Bless them. They have to go with the same light, at the same time, and same day of the year and stand in the exact same spot to duplicate a shot that I took. A case in point is every year in January we go to the Mississippi river in January to photograph the eagles. The place we go has a cat walk along the river. On that cat walk you will generally find anywhere from 20 to 100 photographers photographing eagles. I would venture a guess that there are no duplicate shots.
due to the fact of so many variables.
I share since I have other photographers share with me

Darn - I just posted photos from a secluded little spot in Southern New Hampshire that few know about - I am sure it will be overrun with photographers now.... :) I am happy to share - I suppose if I thought there were a million people who would see the photos and want to go there I wouldn't, but as others have posted, we find our subjects either in common ubiquitous places (the city, our back yard, a third-world marketplace, a beach or park) or simply have common themes (people, animals, flowers, bugs) or are in fact places already very well-known to photographers. I WOULD appreciate it if those posting shots of birds, animals, and places here would at least let us know in what part of the world the photo was taken if it isn't clear. For example, sometimes people post a bird photo and want an ID, but don't say where the photo was taken.

I would never tell anyone where I took my pictures of Mt. Rushmore :-)

No,I don't have a problem with sharing my favorite photo spots & most of the photographers I have talked with are always willing to share a spot where they have spotted an eagles nest or owls nest. That would be just plain selfish & if you believe in karma, not the way to be.Enjoy your day everyone!
In a few circumstances maybe not, however share, i believe in good karma or bad.
Nelson is very particular about who photographs his column!
I will tell you my favorite place or spot so I guess I'm sharing it's the Golden Gate Bridge one hour before sunset early fall starboard side, depending on the weather of course.
Insecure, insecure, insecure! The photographer who won't share places worthy of being photographed is one insecure individual. I love to take friends to locations where I shoot just to see how they see the situation. Lots of fun and an educational experience to boot.

I never really felt the
need to keep a location secret. But a few times I felt some pride in people wanting to know or that they did not know. I
don't do a lot of traditional travel photography so many of my California sites are a bit obscure. Not being say Paris, France I would have to identify a location by say 12 miles North of I-210 on Highway 39 in the San Gabriel Mountains. Desert locations are hard enough to find let alone find again. ;-) I've shot at the Trona Pinnacles a couple times. No need to keep that a secret, most people would never find it. You've likely seen the Pinnacles on TV as they are shown in Ads from time to time (currently in fact).
Anyway, like another Hogger said, no two photographers will make the same exact image. I've shot bell peppers and believe me, mine look nothing like Edward Weston's; mine look crappy so far. Once I got one that I kind of liked. :?

Watch your step? Wear waders is more like it. Oh and probably have to carry a shovel to dig a path. Eh?

Maybe not all of them turned out well, but you can eat your models after the shoot!
