So boberic has his answer. Using his logic I'm curious about everyone's thoughts on the painter. As long as he has the image in his brain it not made? Hasn't he created or made it by thinking of it and just not displayed it yet?

Is the painter painting by numbers or making if from their heart? S-

Interesting to ponder as I envision the painter starting the creative process as he/she puts brush to canvas - that the painting evolves as it's worked, and that what is in the painter's brain is just a rough draft :)

I only know one painter well enough to be fully aware of her workflow - my cousin starts by making a series of pen and ink sketches in small sketchbook. She carries a small camera to help get the colors and shadows nailed down. She chooses one with the composition she wants and only then does the canvas come out.

In a way, she explores the scene and various options much like I do (we sometimes work together which is interesting). We did a photo book together this spring- the same scenes with my photos and her sketches. Our grandkids may get a kick out of it one day.

Super cool about the photo book, Minnie!

Your mention of going out with the painter reminded me I had a friend who did similar. How interesting it would be to compare the visions of each of you on the same scene.

Does anyone else here know a painter that they have, or might, accompany? Experiences to share?

Interesting. If by numbers I would say it was made by someone else, by heart made by him.

From a purely personal point of view I take a photograph and have no problem with the word snapshot and make a picture via PP. PP can vary from a simple crop only to full blown metamorphising of the original.

On a side note is there such a word as metmorphising or have I just invented it?

"Metamorphising"? As a neologizer from way back I can testify to the absolute-friggin-damn-loot-ly beautiful-ness of that word!

And just t'keep in the spirit of things, neologizing is a Fine Art!
