Question about SX 50 HS refurb.

On the Canon website they seem to go on sale for a few days, then off again. I have seen at $179 (and snagged an extra myself) several times in past few months.

We received it a couple of days ago. I purchased for my wife to use.
I took a few photos and it is a capable camera.
I have two problems with it.
1. It comes with imageBrowser instead of ZoomBrowser. I like ZoomBrowser a whole lot better but it appears Canon is trying to phase ZoomBrowser out. Probably because of not working with Windows 8. I am switching to lightroom and photoshop so that problem will go away.
2. The electronic view finder. I am wondering if I am being to picky or is there a problem that Canon needs to fix. I have difficulty getting a clear view. The diopter adjustment is difficult to move. I can not make the view finder clear for my eyes. I have cataracts and progressive lenses and have problems adjusting my Nikon Binoculars. The problem may be my old eyes and big hands.
Maybe I am expecting too much from the viewfinder. Does anyone who has this camera care to comment.

I believe the return window is 14 days on refurbs. I believe if you are within the window you should ask for a replacement. It is what it is an unacceptable answer.
The diopter should work. If it were new you would demand that it work. A refurb is like or better than new and all parts should be working properly.
My 2Cents.
Good luck,
Oz
There is nothing wrong with the viewfinder, trust the viewfinder for what you can see but use live view as much as possible. I have the sx50 and yes the viewfinder sucks. It is supposed to be better on the 60 but the 50 overall o
Is a better camera. IMHO.

The SX50 is noted for it poor at best view finder. Just learn to trust the auto-focus and the little green box, or use the live on the back.
Tmehrkam your Problem #2 seems well covered but little said about Problem #1:

Of course, Everyone knows that there is nothing better than the Adobe brand name... however Adobe oriented common knowledge is not necessarily the true story. Corel Aftershot 2 which sells for about $50 vs LR 6 for abut $150, both affordable. It appears when an expert team evaluated them, the expected answer did not come out... Aftershot 2 was superior in many ways, especially for the beginner. The comparison is done on a split screen. The same photo manipulations are done on each you can see the real time differences. A comparison video beautifully technically done.
Watching the side by side evaluation of the two programs, I decided to go with Aftershot 2 which after viewing the Youtube video ... Why switch from AdobeGod?,well Aftershot 2 works smoother, fewer menus in menus in menus and is quicker when processing. Well worth watching this video, 45 minutes invested in deciding which route you take for life. Once we get a software brand we are often compelled to continue... right up into the clouds!

dpullum... I watched half of the video for Aftershot was impressed but then decided to check which OS is required on the mac side. It needs Mac OS 10.7 or later and I still love working with my 10.6.8 so I guess I'm out of the running.

The problem may very well be your individual eyesight. Have you tried setting the viewfinder without your glasses? It is quite touchy to set, but should adjust for your eyes. Can your wife adjust it to her sight?

I got mine through Adorama. Check 'em out. They currently sell legal refurbs for Canon.

This is a great camera. I have it with me almost all the time.
The only 2 problems I have with it are:
My fat fingers keep hitting the timer function on the Control Dial, and
It doesn't take the greatest indoor shots.

You mention that the diopter is hard to turn, so possibly you haven't been able to get it to the right spot for your vision yet. One handy way to know when diopter is in best position is to leave lens cap on and just look through the viewfinder at the data against the black (the information that shows up, such as battery icon, the shooting mode you're in, etc).
Use that like an eye chart :)
Great idea. As smart as I am, I never thought of that. I go through the diopter adjustment on every new camera and do it while looking at some trees with leaves or something. Linda From Maine, I applaud you.

I bought one for $179 from the Canon Store Refurb section for Mother's Day. My wife is learning how to use it. But says she likes my older Fuji HS10 better. She is used to it. I will admit I prefer the HS10's manual zoom to the powered zoom.
Right now they list them for $386, wait around for the next holiday sale, maybe Labor Day.

I can't take credit; someone on UHH suggested it last year :)
