Question about SX 50 HS refurb.

I purchased on of the Sx 50 Refurbs for $179.00 even got free shipping.

We received it a couple of days ago. I purchased for my wife to use.

I took a few photos and it is a capable camera.

I have two problems with it.
1. It comes with imageBrowser instead of ZoomBrowser. I like ZoomBrowser a whole lot better but it appears Canon is trying to phase ZoomBrowser out. Probably because of not working with Windows 8. I am switching to lightroom and photoshop so that problem will go away.

2. The electronic view finder. I am wondering if I am being to picky or is there a problem that Canon needs to fix. I have difficulty getting a clear view. The diopter adjustment is difficult to move. I can not make the view finder clear for my eyes. I have cataracts and progressive lenses and have problems adjusting my Nikon Binoculars. The problem may be my old eyes and big hands.

Maybe I am expecting too much from the viewfinder. Does anyone who has this camera care to comment.

Since you bought it for your wife to use, I would be more concerned about her feelings.

The camera is usable, takes great photos. She has not had time to do much with it. Neither have I.

I am trying to decide is I got a good copy of the SX 50.

This is the only one I have handled. If there is a problem I want to get it fixed. I just do not know what to expect and it is a Refurb. Came with a RMA sticker just in case.

TSilva has a good point. I have problem vision and I have had fewer issues with the SX50 viewfinder and LCD screen than with other cameras I have used. That said, you might want to a) talk to Canon techs about your experiences, b) take the camera with you to your next eye appt. and discuss the issues with your optometrist and c) take the camera to a local photo equipment dealer (professionals, not Best Buy/Walmart) and get their take on the issue. Talk to Canon first before anything else.

AS noted, it is your wife's camera and her feelings about it that matter.
I bought one for my wife, I too wear progressive grind lenses. The AF on the camera does a good job so when I use it I just ignore the sharpness in the viewfinder and use it for framing only.

I loaned someone one of my cameras that has/had the viewfinder set for me. He kept complaining it wasn't clear and wanted to adjust the diopter knob, I told him to ignore it and only use it for framing, let the AF do its job. I got the camera back with my diopter settings screwed up. I am still pi**ed off after a month.

The SX50 is noted for it poor at best view finder. Just learn to trust the auto-focus and the little green box, or use the live on the back.

What I am hearing what I have is about par.

If that is the case then I will not worry about returning it for repair. Unless my wife is concerned. She has been busy with other things. Daughter just got engaged and is moving to Norway. So the camera is not a priority at this time.

I have used it enough to know that except for the viewfinder and for $179 it is an amazing camera. In many cases can give as good results as my DSLR and 300 mm lens.

You mention that the diopter is hard to turn, so possibly you haven't been able to get it to the right spot for your vision yet. One handy way to know when diopter is in best position is to leave lens cap on and just look through the viewfinder at the data against the black (the information that shows up, such as battery icon, the shooting mode you're in, etc).

Use that like an eye chart :)

Bravo for this simple, clever idea.

I even called the Help Desk at Canon on the vwew finder. The tech took time to go get one out of the box an look at what I was talking about. Ends up, it is what it is. As said, use it for framing, the camera, so for , has done a great job with the focus part.

I bought my SX50 from Canon for $200. When I called to return the case I bought for it, the customer service rep told me they dropped the price by $21 and gave me a credit. Great Service.

I purchased from the Canon USA web site. The offer ended July 5. It was a special promotion.

I received an email from Canon because I was registered with their site.

Everyone has been getting them directly from Canon. You can google "powershot refurbished camera". Unfortunately the price keeps changing up and down. I got one for $169 when there was an additional $10 off with free shipping, but you have to keep checking almost daily. When I first saw the $179 price I waited and the price then jumped into the mid $300s and I thought "What??" then about a week later it dropped back to $179, plus the extra $10 off. Don't count on getting the extra off again.. I think it was for mothers day or something - don't remember. Today I see it is $386. Incidentally, like others have mentioned mine was like new. Could not tell the difference and comes with the same one year warranty, as new. I also bought an Elph 330 HS at a different time and when it came it had the wrong battery. Called them and they sent another camera with a free genuine Canon case because of the error and provided means to return the original camera with the wrong battery. Great service. I was a little surprised they just didn't want to swap out the batteries.
