I travel 3 times per year. Have always used my D810 with the holy trinity and it has gotten hard to travel with this equipment. Am thinking of getting the Sony alpha 6000 or can wait for the full frame a7ii which is due out shortly. Does anyone have any experience with the alpha a6000 or should I wait and see on the full frame. The reviews on the a6000 are excellent. Would get the Sony Zeiss 16-70 with the a6000 to start with.

The a7mk2 has been out since last December. It is a great camera, as is the a6000. I own both. The one coming out is the a7rii. From what I've heard of its features I'd say you would be happy with any of them.

My brother-in-law uses a Sony a6000 and loves it.
Though you may want to wait a few months before you invest in new gear. There is talk that Nikon will come out with a full frame mirrorless F-Mount camera this fall. If so, you will be able to use the lenses you now have with it.

A first generation full frame mirrorless camera from Nikon? With all the problems they have had with the releases of most of their recent cameras... I'd hold off on taking that chance.

BESIDES; either of the Sony cameras can use Nikon lenses with the appropriate adapter. And without a doubt, the Sony camera WILL be less expensive and trouble free. ;)

I have the Sony a6000 and the Sony/Zeiss 16-70 as well as a Nikon D7100 with several lenses. The Sony combo is now used about 80% of the time for everything except wildlife or when I need a fast f1.8 lens. The Sony will be the only camera I will take on our trip to eastern Canada and a cruise later this month with the 16-70 lens and a Sony 10-18 lens.

I heartily recommend this combo for you!

I've had the a6000 for over a year. It's great to travel with since it doesn't take up a ton of room in the carry on. I use the Zeiss lens which is better than the kit lens.

I shoot with the Nikon D810 also I bought the Sony RX100 iii and I am pretty impressed with this tiny camera? Now this is a point &shoot, put it in a pocket and go? I am also looking at sony 6000, what stopped me was you have the holy trinity of nikon lens, let's say $7000 spent? Now to spend for the good quality Zeis lens $1800 can you justify it, I must be totally Honest now, last week I was So Aggravated with Nikon.com I was Selling all my Nikon equipment and going mirrored Sony. I just came to the reality that Ii would have lost Thousands of Dollars!! That is the only reason I am still shooting with my Nikon and I photographed for over 25 years using Nikons!! I will be buying the Sony with the lens mount this could work, but the size and weight are you really saving! And with the point & shoot that has limitations just my thoughts. Good luck

Old timer here from back in the Minolta X700 days. Outside of a couple of inexpensive point and shoots over the last dozen years or so, I finally spent a few bucks and purchased the A6000 back in February with the 16-50 kit lens. That lens does a decent job. Some of my photos taken with that combo have been posted here. That lens allows you to carry the camera in a cargo pocket in your shorts or a pocket in your jacket just a quick grab away. Turn it on while you are removing the lens cap (always a good idea) and it is ready to shoot by the time it is up to your eye. I have since added the following Sony lenses: SEL30M35 macro, the 55-210 and the 28-70 full frame which I keep on the camera when I am driving. I call it my barn lens.

Hope this helps. BTW, I purchased it at Best Buy for the holiday sale price of $599.

I included a couple sample photos from the kit lens.

Rick

To answer your question about using the Nikon lenses, yes you can. There are adapters out there that will allow you to use the Nikon lenses on the A6000 and still retain full automatic capabilities. Otherwise, you will need to set your camera to shutter priority or full manual modes.

I have the A6000 and find it to be a very good camera. It has lightning fast focus and produces very good images. Its only real shortcoming, IMO, is the small selection of lenses for it from Sony. On the plus side, what you get is a small, light, full-function camera that can do just about anything a DSLR can do. If you can afford it, it's a smart purchase, as far as I'm concerned. Just know that it is not a point and shoot pocket camera. It is a serious piece of equipment.

I strongly considered the Sony A7 lineup also, but the problem with full frame sensors are the full frame lenses which are much larger and heavier than the A6000 lenses or other APSC or M4/3 lenses. Most of the weight is in the lenses. And I'm talking about the holy trinity comparable zooms, which for the A7 lineup are not highly rated either. Most of my friends who have moved to the A7 are shooting the pro primes, which makes sense. Then you have a smaller, lighter, high quality system. If you prefer the zooms as I do, no thanks.

You can use any brand lens that there is an E mount adapter for. So even if you don't like Sony's selection of native E mount lenses you can always use something else. ;)

by using Nikon lenses on the a6000 it would defeat the purpose of the system. The main feature I want is light and mobile to travel easier with

If you don't think they're highly rated you should watch the videos of the pro's using them.

Many pros also use the a6000 as a travel camera
