First, of those that own one, do I need to purchase a protective cover for the LCD. I have heard its a special hardened glass that will not mark or scratch.
I do have a couple of wildlife lenses--Sigma and Tamron
What walk around lenses do you suggest ? I would like to have something tack sharp !! 17--50 18--70
I do have a Sigma 18--250, but thought there may be something better.
Thanks for the help !!!
I use a Vello optical glass cover on my 7d. Can't tell the difference. I shoot left eyed so I would get ssmuges of nose oil on the LCD so I put the cover on so that I did't have to worry about constant cleaning
As much as it pains me to agree with you...on this one I will...got one for the car touch screen too...

First, congrats on the new camera. Second, I am of the school I'd rather be safe than sorry. Less scratches the higher your resale value should you decide to sell or trade. I have the GGS LCD protector on my 7000. Bought for $11.95 from a camera shop in Texas. I do know there are many out there, at the time the GGS was very good protector.
Enjoy, post up some photos.

I've never had a protection cover on my glass on any camera and never had a scratch.
I use my Nikon 18-200 VRII as my walkaround lens. It is very sharp. Like others my second main lens is the 35 f1.8. My third is the Rokinon 8mm just for the fun of it.
I use the Giottos. It is hardened glass. I prefer it to the Nikon plastic or the zagg stick on.
It's a personal preference thing. I don't have one on the D7100 and it was kind of pointless with the articulated screen on the D5000.
As far as cosmetics go, I would be more concerned with shutter count than a scratch or two but then my 7100 fell off of my lap in St. Thomas (I stood up) while sitting on a tour bus and fell about 4 feet onto the pavement.
The camera was fine but there was a collective "Oh!" from the surrounding crowd when the 18-55 mm lens exploded. The point being, my camera is way past the worrying about a few scratches phase.
By the way, the LCD still doesn't have a scratch on it. :)
