First, of those that own one, do I need to purchase a protective cover for the LCD. I have heard its a special hardened glass that will not mark or scratch.

I do have a couple of wildlife lenses--Sigma and Tamron
What walk around lenses do you suggest ? I would like to have something tack sharp !! 17--50 18--70

I do have a Sigma 18--250, but thought there may be something better.
Thanks for the help !!!

Denny, I have the 18-250 and it Does a fine job after I focus tuned it. It was front focused. The 35 1.8 is my sharpness lens tho. Enjoy your new camera it's a good one.

I have a D7000. I read something about the LCD glass being hard but the protective covers are about $5. Seems like cheap insurance, I bought one.

I highly recommend the Nikkor AF-S DX 35mm F1.8. It is a prime lens (use your feet to zoom), tack sharp, fast, a "Normal" lens for DX format, and a fabulous walk around lens. Bonus, the cost is about $200, or less, NEW.

Do you tend to get scratches on your camera LCDs? With all the digital cameras I have owned (including inexpensive compact cameras), I've never had to deal with scratches on the LCD screen, as I never place cameras backside-down on hard, rough surfaces that could potentially produce scratches.

I've just bought a D7100. Bought one of these from China via Ebay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271827957913 (or you can have one of these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/P4PM-Fotga-Hard-Optical-Glass-LCD-Screen-Protector-Guard-for-Nikon-D7100-Camera-/400718125953?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item5d4ca95b81 which includes a small cover for the top panel). I bought one & fitted it. In Iceland, dropped the camera which stopped the screen working & smashed the protective cover. I've no idea if, without the cover, it would have smashed the screen itself but, for £1.97...! Repair is costing £125 as this is user-inflicted so obviously not covered by warranty.

I've had my 7100 since April. No cover for the LCD and my kit lens which is 18-140 is very good

I've put the Zagg Invisible shield on just about every LCD I have. It's very good quality, with a lifetime guarantee. If you ever want to sell your camera, having a clean LCD is a big plus. Save the box the camera came in, too. That seems to help with resale.

For some reason, Amazon doesn't have Zagg right now.

I have one of these on my D610 and 7200. I like the fact that it is a hard cover rather than plastic. ;)

If you would like to see what happens when you attach that 35 mm 1.8 to a D7100 check this:

http://www.ashmolephotography.com/

Yes, Mr. Ashmole is also very adept at Photoshop but it will give yiou an idea of what can be done with what you have. My wife bought me a 35 for Father's Day so now I have to get off of my butt and do the zoom but I'm really looking forward to playing with the new lens. :)
