This is the newer version on the one I have used for a few years that has works well. It takes most of the common card types and is USB 3 and backward compatible.

Lexar, Adobe, Sandisk, Targus, and many others. SD card readers are not as picky as Compact Flash or some of the others.. But, you do want to make sure that the card reader will read not only SD but SDHC and MMC and any other upgrades to the cards as well. Older SD only readers will not recognise the newer upgrades to the high performance cards.

There are many USB card readers for sale through B&H and others that are easy to use (with a Windows 7 or better machine) and relatively cheap. I think the one I currently have is by Asus, but I'm not sure. Don't use it very often because most of my computers have built-in multi-card readers.

Your computer will read the card when you connect a cable from the camera to its USB port. Reliable, no possible way to damage the card or pins in the camera.

Be careful! Some of the really low price readers will scratch your card and slowly make the card unreliable.

B&H had this for $15 now and they are normally $35. I know I paid $35 for mine.
Use a good card reader. They are NOT all the same. This one is USB3 and it's designed for the fast SD cards. If you use the wrong card reader, it can cause cards to deteriorate over time and eventually cause a card to fail. Case in point, a guy that I know has Lexar 1000x CF cards. Very fast cards and he has a Mac with a mac card reader that's got a very fast card reader built in. I can't remember what they call it (could be fire wire or something) Anyway, his Lexar card failed. He called Lexar, they asked him what card reader he uses and he felt very safe in telling the Lexar rep that he uses a Mac with the latest very fast card reader. The Lexar rep said, no no no, you need a card reader, any card reader, that is UDMA 7 compliant or the cards will eventually go bad. Straight from Lexar.
I don't think that the SD cards are UDMA 7, but I'd rather use a good card reader and not take a chance on a card becoming corrupt. They aren't very expensive.

Make sure you get one that's USB-3 capable so you can use it with the current generation of computers. They are backward compatible, so even if your current computer only has USB-2, you can use the USB 3 card reader. USB-3 allows for much faster transfers.
