Sony has upgraded some of their G lenses.

They've added the nano coatings to further reduce flare, but the BIGGEST improvements are to the SSM drive.

The new lenses are much faster than the originals... which were extremely fast to begin with.

Well, the improvement to the lenses was to keep up with the new AF module they put in the A77II.

I've noticed that the A77II's AF module CAN be faster than the lenses ability to respond. Not with the G II lenses though.

It's worth the upgrade to a G II (and the new versions of the CZ lenses when they are released) if you have the A77II.

This is something else I was afraid of - that - like Nikon, you need the absolute latest/newest lenses to make things work as advertised ! - unlike Canon - where my 1987 300 2.8 works as good as the latest version - with ANY Canon body - maybe better !
But I do appreciate the innovation that Sony brings to the table - and would like to make some use of it . But, I am NOT a rich person and money does matter . Maybe my finances are not ready to take advantage of Sony's innovations at this early stage, but I would hope not.

My CZ 24-70mm is fast enough, but then we are only talking 70mm.

My current 70-300mm is fast enough to keep up with the AF about 90-95% of the time.

My buddy's 70-400mm G II never get's lost. I'm going to buy my own copy next year... yep; feeding the pig for that lens. ;)

All my AF Minoltas are plenty quick because it seems Sony changed the gearing on the camera's screw drive.

So you can use any lens... but the G II's are so blazing fast they can handle the A77II with ease whereas I have missed shots with other lenses.

Skipped the trip so here is an example of that AF module.

I shot these yesterday after work out on Cape San Blas. Was lucky enough to see a family of Browns feeding near shore.

They were taken with the A77II with Sony 70-300mm f/4.5 G lens mounted.

Most were between 250-300mm and they shot at 1/1000 and f/5 on a dreary day. The focus is spot on, and the tracking is extremely fast. In fact, the Stooping Pelicans usually dove faster than my old reflexes could keep up with, so you'll notice the finish is a little off.

All shot with Lock-on AF from the center spot.

In 12 fps burst mode the A77II will give you AF and SS control, but the Aperture is locked on what ever the first shot is. Auto Exposure is also fully functional, but the exposure changes are done shifting ISO.

The buffer is big enough for 5-6 second bursts using JPEGS before it slows down from 12 fps to slower... IF you are using a fast SD card. Otherwise, it will slow down considerably until the buffer clears. I use 64 gig cards rated at 90MB/Second.

Very interesting ! Do the latest Sony lenses still have mechanical diaphrams ??

If by mechanical diaphrams you adjustable rings on the barrel, the answer is no.

The diaphrams are controlled by a lever on the back side of the lens next to the contacts that slots over another lever inside the body which controls the diaphragm by sliding up and down.

All Sony/Minolta/CZ A mount lenses share this arrangement.

Yes, what I mean is by the lever actuation - like Nikon - except Nikon - as I understand it - has some lenses with electronic diaphrams also - like Canon.
