I have only shot it so far on all my cameras to fine tune autofocus (which by the way did not need it), but I didn't find it soft at 150mm.
Outstanging

Love the dragon fly (I think) shot. I've got to get out with mine soon. Did you hand-hold or use tripod?

Monopod, I am over 70 and out of shape plus a very light case of what could be Parkinson so hand holding it is out of the question. I used to own the 50-500 and 150-500 Sigma's, but this lens has really outshined those lenses. I am not sorry I purchased it and waited 4 months for it.

Congratulations Bruce! Those images look good. May have to look into one. The 600 f4 is out of the question for me. Mucho bucks!

I agree, the 600mm might have slightly better IQ, but unless I was making big bucks for shooting it is out of the question for me as well. This is a great lens for the money and if Nikon had made it the cost would have been double.

Weather sealing, extra glass (more lens) much heavier because it is ruggedly made. Overall the sports lens is more professionally oriented and the contemporary is consumer oriented. Best check them out at the Sigma web site for a more detailed discussion.

But is there a noticeable ($1000) difference in image quality? The last comparison test I saw indicated virtually no difference in that all important criterion.

There is very little difference in IQ between Tamron or Sigma Contemporary and this lens (it is miniscule and hardly noticeable). The difference is in the quality of the lens, while the latter two will do the job for the most part, they will not hold up to the abuse that the Sigma Sport lens offers. It is just like buying a consumer grade camera versus a professional grade camera, both cameras are capable of producing fantastic photographs in the right hands, but the professional grade camera can be pushed a little further than the consumer grade. Build quality and weather proofing is important to me especially in a lens meant to take wildlife photographs, if I am caught in a sudden downpour I don't have to worry about the lens (and my top grade cameras are weatherproof). There are other features that set them apart, but you can explore that for yourself.
