Short and Sweet- Why are there so many rude answers to reasonable questions-
AND why are relatively simple questions answered via resources in place of on the forum? Isn't the forum for sharing information?
Lately seems like a trend.
And PS- this isn't the easiest site to navigate.

It seems every blog has more than a fair share of trolls / rabble rousers
/ trouble makers. Hopefully they will go away if we don't respond to their taunts.

Some people on here (as anywhere) seem naturally obnoxious so, if possible, just ignore them. By being that way it really shows the lack of depth to their character anyway so any damage done is self inflicted on their part. The site is quite easy to navigate once you know where things are which will take a relatively small investment of time and perseverance. The bottom line is that most people on here are genuinely helpful, like-minded and willing to share which ultimately makes it all worthwhile.

Usually people with great knowledge can sometimes become self centered as they feel their perspective is the only way.
Its called arrogance..
I too have become a victim of my own venom.

Responses to my questions have been positive (so I'm not complaining on my own behalf). But I do have sympathy for those who have had poor experiences- ewwwwww!

For the last statement, I'm afraid you'd have to approach Admin. None of the users can do anything about that.

Unfortunately, in the written text, we do not have the advantages of tone of voice, facial expression or body language. I believe that to be the cause for at least a number of the answers appearing to be rude. They're just short and to the point.

As to responding via resources: When something is already explained, and explained well, on some website, why should we then explain the whole thing all over again, when a one-line reference by the replyer and a single mouseclick by the reader will give the same result?

I believe that Google is the most-used search engine, but believe it or not, there still are computer users who have no idea what Google is, or what it can do for you. So I'd like to at least point to Google, especially when a question is asked for which the answer can easily be found through Google.

Occasionally I will send a reply to a post, and once it's been sent, open my post to Edit, then go look on the 'net for further information to add. Such an incident happened tonight, and because the info I was looking for was buried deep into the website, by the time I hit Send to update my reply, OP had expressed his displeasure with me and my response.

If all that makes me grouchy, so be it - I can live with it.

I cannot speak for others, but I frequently answer questions by posting the site location for two (actually three) reasons:

1. Often the site contains more information than can be transmitted in a short typed answer. Often there are preliminary steps, warnings and/or specific sequences that the reader should be aware of before starting a procedure or downloading a file.

2. I'm not the smartest person in the world, and, as I get older, my eyes and brain will misread or misunderstand something important. Rather than risk posting the wrong information, I would rather you to the site.

3. Quite honestly, sometimes I get tired and/or lazy (not an excuse; just a reason).

I hope this helps. As for my grouchiness, I have no valid explanation.

Every forum has its grouchy people. You can't let them bother you. Just try to avoid them.

But did you Google it first, or do a search for previous threads on this before you asked?

(that seems to be about the first thing people always jump on about)

Add to that that the search function here does not work well. As an experiment I have looked at a recent post, copied part of the title and entered it in the advanced search asking for most recent first and .... that post does not appear. Frequently the only way of finding things on this site is to ask other users.

Thank you for posting this. I too am bothered by the rude answers to questions posted here. The lesson I have learned is don't ask questions.

Agree on your points about site navigation (not good interface or organization) and grouchy people. I cannot fathom why people enjoy being nasty but quite a few of those congregate here. If one cannot be helpful, why not just move on and don't respond at all?

As for resources, I do some linking to answers if I think the resource site has a better/clearer explanation than I could give, or the answer would take more space than anyone is willing to read. If the answer is something I can easily explain, I do.

Morning Star is right that lots of folks don't know how to find things via Google. I'm married to one. He is plenty smart and fairly computer-capable but he has never got his mind wrapped around how to get the best results from search engines so I am the official Googler for the family.
