Lighthearted you are and you survived.
I laughed after a crash once too.
Dog was between my legs, under the desk.
Computer crashed.
Later figured out I had patted the dog on the head, tail got wagged, and a swipe of the tail had unplugged the power cord.

I see Carbonite recommended a few times.
The following is opinion...
Carbonite has two problems that makes me not include it in my backup solution.
1. It doesn't backup system files. This means that while your data is backed up, your OS and program files aren't. Many (if not most) of us couldn't lay our hands on the installation disks of some of our programs for love nor money. I know I put mine in a safe place, I just don't remember where that safe place is. They're safe, but lost.
2. Carbonite is slow. I have well over 50 Gigs of just image files. Using an external USB 3 drive, an image of my C: drive takes well under an hour, and my data drive is imaged on just a little over an hour. And many of us have far a larger number of image files than I do.
This doesn't even mention security. When security companies get hacked, Carbonite doesn't stand a chance of being secure. My data is safer on my system, simply because it isn't worth the hassle of getting to it.

OC, if, with 'all of your computer skills', you don't have a backup, well, those skills are in question.

So when my computer crashed this evening i applied all of my considerable computer skills to getting it running again. I failed, calmly accepted the fact that all my images were gone forever, and leaned back to enjoy a cigarette. Couldn't reach the ashtray and in moving it discovered it was setting on the numeric keyboard enter key.

You'd be surprised how many times I've seen 911 emergency dispatchers lean stuff on keyboards and radio dispatch consoles. 2:00 am service calls for things like a dispatcher leaning a purse on the transmit button and having a radio channel stuck on transmit - and worse yet, the radio users in their cars hearing the dispatcher in a frenzy trying to get help for the problem!

I've done dumb s*** like that too. Leaving something touching a key and the whole computer acts nuts and scaring me half to death.

Please don't let that happen twice.

Good Catch! But now that you experienced that "sinking" feeling, maybe now is the time for an external hard drive.

The computer gods may be telling you something.

Thats right folks. turned the power back on and i'm running again.

(PS i dumped 14 pages of empty comment posts on sopmeones thread while it was misbehaving, hope he doesn't mind)
I do not back up anything, anywhere, for any reaso... (show quote)

Ha yep. Something on a laptop track pad (like a wayward thumb) will have a similar effect. Glad u got your computer back.

14 pages of empty content is no big deal, if it was 14 pages of troll content that would be a problem.

One more thing. I say never back up anything that is of no value to you. That is a waste of disk space. However be aware that digital media can be fickle, it can suddenly go away. Forever. Just because it hasn't happened yet doesn't mean it won't. If valuable things disappear it is a loss. Just saying.
