Zoom back to Prime

I have not used a prime lens in 30 years when I put the Topcon in the closet. Picked up a used Olympus 50mm f2. macro yesterday and spent several hours shooting flowers. Kept going for the non-existent zoom ring.
I will get accustomed to the change and it appears that the lens was a good decision.
For that matter have not had f2 since the Topcon was retired.

I use a prime lens on my Olympus all the time, it's a Sigma 19mm, I also have a Sigma 30mm.
The images are superb and very sharp and need very little PP if any.

Zoom is convenient but the prime just gives so much better images.
I don't care how good your glass is, if you have 23 elements between the subject and the sensor, it will effect the image.
I use a 105mm prime or a 24-85 zoom most of the time. Anytime you have an extreme zoom like a 18-300-- there has to be compromises.

I admit that I use a 18-200 zoom most of the time but I have three primes that earn their keep as well. :)

Zooming with your feet is not only fun and challenging, but great physical excersise as well. Much more enjoyable than using a treadmill.

It's also easy to remove one prime lens and replace it with another prime lens of a different focal length. After all, isn't that one of the main benefits of an interchangeable lens camera?

From wide angle up to moderate telephoto (about 100 mm for full frame) prime lenses may be all you need. It's at longer focal lengths where multiple prime lenses become very expensive and heavy where zooms are worth considering.

If you want a super zoom, get a point-and-shoot with an 18 to whatever focal length permanently attached.

I wish the newer(younger) photographers would try the primes. You don't need a 5-3000 zoom to get good photos.
I think we have gotten lazy and forgotten the true joy of photography. Your feet DO Work people.
You have to think ahead a little bit but no one can argue that the primes product the best images.
I admit I use my Canon SX50 but usually for snapshots of family and friends.

When I'm riding I keep a 18-200 on my camera at full auto on a Black Rapid sling. I never know what will be along the road that I want to capture. When I see something I really like I go manual, tripod, prime lens and remote shutter release. Admittedly I'm just a hobbyist. :-)

That's so funny. I've been a prime shooter almost exclusively and when I put a zoom on I kept zooming instead of focusing!

Also, I handed my camera (fixed 35mm no zoom) to a guy and he kept spinning the focus ring and asked me "how come it's not zooming?"

I regularly use a 50, an 85 and a 200 prime! It's all about speed and DoF!! ;-)
