T3i , bought a grip and it came with 2 1700 batteries . My stock charger only charges them to 1000 , what charger do I need to fully charge them? Been looking but they don't say . orni don't understand there way of putting it .

Could be the batteries...I got a battery from a camera store here in Dayton...not even 6 months old will now only charge to 70% and the rate of power is only about 3 hours of use before its out of power. Not even worth carrying around anymore.
On the back of factory canon charger it says it only charges to 1000 though , not 1700

With these generic grips and battery packages you NEVER know exactly what kind of service or compatibility you will get. They are a crapshoot every time.
Thanks , maybe I'll try some diff batteries. They work good just don't fully charge

I'm curious as to what makes you think your charger only charges to 1000mAh. Chargers typically charge to a specific voltage level, not wattage. I have various types of batteries of a wide range of mAh ratings. They all charge just fine in the Canon charger that came with my 6D. My 7DII came with a higher rated battery. I never even unwrapped the charger. I just use the older 6D charger. No problems.

Unless you can measure the actual performance - voltage and mAh delivery - I don't know how you would really know what the reality of the situation is. A manufacturer can print anything the want on the battery regardless of what it actually delivers. My La Crosse charger can measure those things for AA or AAA batteries, but I'm not convinced there would be much value getting an equivalent capability for camera batteries even if they are available.
Canon batteries are expensive, but they deliver and they last a long time. Some off brand batteries do also, plenty of discussion on the Hog.

As you probably suspect, that statement on the charger is a "cover your butt" statement by Canon. If someone has trouble charging any battery except the one specified by Canon for that camera they can't come back on Canon and say "your charger damaged my battery". The statement on Canon chargers now is: Charge Only Batteries Described In Operation Manual.Other Types Of Batteries May Burst Causing Personal Injury And Damage.
I would suspect that the statement was changed to avoid the type of confusion the OP has experienced.
The charger regulates it's charge based on voltage, not wattage.

The mA/h figure is a
rate, not a charge level.
If the charger is designed to charge a 1000 mA/h battery it will also charge a 1700 mA/h battery, though it will take longer to reach the full charge level.
Battery charger charge to a voltage/temperature and after that tricker charge the battery. So it would fully charge either a 1000mAH or 1700mAH.
It's mAH and not mA/H and thus it's not a rate. It's the charge capacity. That is the battery can supply 1000mA for 1 hr or 500mA for 2 hrs etc..

I love the concept of a "tricker charge", but yes, it is all about capacity not the rate of energy delivery, at least in the lower 48. Maybe it is different in Alaska! Something to do with the temperature perhaps?

My mistake, it is not a rate, it is indeed charge capacity.
The point is still the same, the charger will charge either a 1000 mAh battery or a 1700 mAh battery. It just takes longer for the larger capacity battery.
