I do portrait model photography and I use a canon 85 1.8 lens . The problem is I go to meet up groups with say 20 photographers and 5 models . Using my 85 1.8 is a awesome lens .Can't get good shot most time because I have to closer then others . I use a tripod for full body shots but others get in the way . Thinking of getting the canon 24-105 f 4 is lens ,or stay with what I have .P.S can't afford the 70-200 mm 2.8 lens cheers please help :)

Hard to do meaningful work in a crowd .....also, ditch the tripod and work from a monopod with a tilt head and flip mount ( horizontal to vertical) I would use the fast one hand adjustable Manfro 685b neotek.

Do you belong to a goup or photo club in Port Coquitlam?
20 photographers to 5 models isn't that bad is it? Unless only one of the models poses at a time and all 20 photographers have to take a photo at the same time.

I'm going out on a photowalk on Sunday, organized by Kerrisdale Cameras in Willowbrook. Hope the "models" in the Vancouver Zoo behave ;-)
This is the third photowalk Kerrisdale has organized, but I wasn't able to go on the first two.

I too participate in some of these Meetup type shoots and began with a Canon 28-135 lens. I had the same problem you've encountered with being unable to get close enough due to other photographers. I would highly recommend the Canon 70-200 f4. It's an excellent quality lens and both less expensive and lighter than the 2.8. It will help you get those shots you're unable to get now.

The 24-105 f/4 is perhaps a little short, and perhaps a little slow, for what you need. The 70-200 f/2.8 is just wide enough for full body if you can step back far enough. I shoot in these model meet ups, and have to switch lenses to get wide enough because I can't step back.

The 85 is a bit short for head shots; I usually shoot in the 100-150 range for these. But it will work if you have to shoot close.

My recommendation is to get a 50mm f/1.8 and 100mm f/2. These three fast primes will provide lots of flexibility without breaking the bank. And give you low light and shallow DOF options that you won't get with the slower zooms.

If you do not mind saving money, either the older Tamron SP 35-105 2.8 (hard to find) or the Tamron SP 28-105 2.8 ( easier to find) might work very well for you ...... both full frame and about $150-300 depending on where you find them .....Tokina also makes an older ATX 50-135 2.8 also.

Snappy, I'm having a little trouble understanding how these group shoots work? Is there Aline that everybody stands behind?
I don't see how you can shoot outdoors wothout eityer strobes or at least reflectors and get decent shots.
Why can't they be organized that the session starts with headshots with the shortest lenses then keep stepping back for different focul lengths. That way everybody taking part can get shots. Those with more lenses or wider ranging zooms will Just get to shoot more.
I shoot LOTS of models and use the 24-105 f4 probably the most. It works very well. I also shoot an 85 1.8, mostly wide open using ND's.
In bright outdoor conditions a fast lens will loose all its advantage without an ND.
One thing I've never used is a tripod, much less a mono but I've never shot in a group either!! Good luck. ;-)
