I use either a ring/ point light or a speed light equipped with a diffuser for my macro (my niche). The one major drawback is reflections on shiny subjects. The pluses are that the brief duration of the flash stops all motion, be it my own or my subjects, and it allows me to stop down the aperture which increases the depth of field ( pitfifully shallow as it is) If you go the ring light route, I’d stay away from most LED units as they are a bit underpowered.

Ok, I do have a Speedlight flash and a few styles of diffusers, so I will definitely try that on my Macro before I invest in any kind of other light source, like a Ring Flash.
So, do you think a Ring Flash would (Might) overpower(blow-out) my subject in a Macro shot?
What is a "Point" Light?

I use an older ring/point unit made by Sunpack for the Lester Dine Corp. I have several. They date back to the mid 80’s but the trigger voltage is safe. They were marketed to Dentists. They are a combination ring flash with a small flash mounted to one side. Search on eBay for the Lester Dine ring flash and you will see what I mean. The older units were AC powered, but they were replaced by units with a power unit that sits in the hot shoe of the camera. Sunpack marketed their own without the point light ( DX-8R). I will link to an image of one when I’m at my desktop instead of my phone.

Here is a link to an image of one on my Flickr stream...This is a little older unit as it has a toggle switch instead of a slide switch to change where the illumination comes from...Plus I have swapped out the interchangeable foot module to a single pin unit as the older Nikon TTL does not communicate properly with Nikon DSLRs. The second image shows a frontal view of it...

Just an update, I also have a few other macro lenses since this image was taken. I have another Lester Dine 105 F2.8, a Nikkor AF 105mm F2.8 micro and a 60mm F2.8 Olympus AF for my Oly O-MD E-M5 Mark II
