I uploaded the image below straight from raw; no exposure, color processing, etc., at all. The cranes are underexposed, the water behind them quite overexposed. How does one deal with such a lighting situation? Multiple different exposures is out; they are constantly moving.

Thx for ideas.

In every instance you will encounter as a photographer, you have to decide where to "place" the exposure.

Sometimes it's easy; the whole scene is the same and you just mash the shutter button.

Other times the dynamic range is wider or even too much for the camera to handle, in these instances it becomes a more difficult decision.

You have several choices:

1.) Expose for the water in which case the birds will be in shadow.

2.) Expose for the birds in which case the water will blow out.

3.) Light the birds so as to equalize the light on them vs the water.

4.) Choose #1 and then raise the birds exposure in post.

5.) Wait to shoot until the light is more pleasing to your eye.

As I said, this is the decision you make everytime you pull the trigger, generally you just don't realize it, that's all.
