Nice. I like seeing old things restored. That's got to be an expensive proposition.

Yeah Jerry. These guys were really going at it.

I would love to go back to watch them re-tube the boiler.
notice the different sized tube holes. This is a super heated
boiler. They run one once a month.
That's just good old time fun.

These were taken at a Train Museum just outside
of Yosemite National Park.

#3 has been restored. They were in the process
of restoring another one while I was there.

You can see them putting in new rivets.
They will be re-tubing the boiler at a later date.

This is a 5 car round house

Thanks Mark
A very nice set. And very interesting.

Glad you enjoyed them Mac.
This 5 wheel house train station is one of a very few left.
It was used along with #3 in a lot of movies and tv shows
back in the day.

I stumbled onto it by accident and really enjoyed it.

Thanks for looking Angela.
I had as much fun watching the train work as I did
in Yosemite Park.

Go figure.

I've been to the Altoona (Pa.) Railroaders Museum, but the shops were closed to the public.

Yeah, this one is closed to the public unless you pay
for a separate tour.

I was lucky. I paid for a tour, but made friends with the workers before hand. I'm a boiler mechanic myself.

Most of these photos were taken before my real tour
started. They were so nice putting up with me.

When they were installing the red hot rivets the noise
was really loud. Good thing I can't hear anyway.
Haa.

After I got out of the Navy I worked for American Bridge (US Steel) in the North Assembly Yard where we pre-fabricated the bridges before they went to the site. I was originally hired as a rivet catcher, but before I started a coupled of other jobs came open and I was reassigned to be a reamers helper. Anyway, you could hear those rivet guns all over the yard.

Oooh my gosh. I'll bet. I lived in McKeesport Pa.
in 78-80. By the time I left most of those old steel mills were shut down. Very sad times.

When National Tube closed it devastated that area.
