While sitting in my groundblind yesterday afternoon hoping to get some more bluejay shots I heard the sound of a large bird flying just over the blind, looked around and spotted this guy on a pine tree about 15 yds from the blind. It's the largest woodpecker I've yet seen, the third picture is after he flew over to a dead tree in the neighbors yard about 100 yds away and is not cropped. And yes I did get a couple more bluejay shots. Have A Blessed Day !!!

Nice shots of the elusive Pileated Woodpecker...nice set

Thank You A. J. and thank you for the thumbsup. Hopefully the male's somewhere close by and I'll get some shots of him also.

Pileateds are fantastic birds - they make a terrific loud call that makes you think you are in the jungle! They were the inspiration for "Woody Woodpecker".

Looks to me like the kind of woodpecker that makes holes in the trunk of a tree. LOL.

Indeed, according to an article I read on the internet the holes can get up to 24" deep
