While sitting in my groundblind yesterday afternoon hoping to get some more bluejay shots I heard the sound of a large bird flying just over the blind, looked around and spotted this guy on a pine tree about 15 yds from the blind. It's the largest woodpecker I've yet seen, the third picture is after he flew over to a dead tree in the neighbors yard about 100 yds away and is not cropped. And yes I did get a couple more bluejay shots. Have A Blessed Day !!!

If you go back to that tree in six month, you'll see that the hole is pretty much closed. We have a tree out front that has had a dozen 3" holes made in it, and they've all closed up. I think the birds have saved the tree by eating the bugs inside it.

Nice !!! Wish I had that variety around here.... Seems I have most all of the others that visit my backyard but not this one.... At least I haven't seen one yet.

Excellent photos of the pileated. Around here, blue jays are a dime a dozen, but a pileated is a rare treat and high on my bucket list. Thanks for posting.

As usual I'm late for the ID. But great shots of the Pileated, that I always think looks a bit like a terydactyl! A bit prehistoric. The other one I refer to as the blue backed robber... Better known as the artful dodger! 😉
