I am interested in purchasing the new Canon 100-400 IS II lens, but have the 100-400 IS that I will need to sell. I refuse to use eBay, so I am seeking viable alternatives. The lens itself is cherry, but the newer lens has features this one doesn't. What would be a fair price? It has the case and tripod mount bracket. Last used two weeks ago at a sporting event, and worked well. I would rate it at good to excellent condition as there are no dings, dents or scratches.

What I often do is get an automated quote from B&H and any other retailer that lets you just punch in the info and then gives you a value. Then I look and see what they are selling the same lens for used. That gives me my high and low points so I set a price somewhere in between, keeping in mind that I don't have a return policy nor offer any warranty.

Sold mine in similar condition for $850.00. It included the case, caps and hood. Got the new 100-400. What a difference.

May I ask why you refuse to use Ebay? Could it be the high seller fee's?

When you are establishing a price you should remember that a lot of the used stuff sold by companies still come with some sort of warrenty. You can not expect to get the same price as them. Best of luck, hope you get top dollar. That is still a good lens.

As a buyer, I would want to know how old the lens is, has it ever been serviced in any way ? - and by who ? There are mediocre copies out there and there are many that should be serviced. The lens is valuable enough that I would never buy one without a warranty. High paying buyers will expect the same .....

Almost all old lenses are out of warranty, I believe. I have only had one issue buying on Ebay which was rectified by Ebay. Warranties are generally not transferable. Buying used has its risks, but the savings are substantial. Over the years I have save several thousand dollars on used equipment with no problems. I only purchase items that are in original boxes (tends to me care from the owner) and like new appearance. Had only one malfunction of a 70D focusing at large aperture (known problem with some units), and the seller and I split the $200 repair fee. (warranty not transferable even though the camera was only 6 months old.)

I have also bought camera bodies and several lenses on ebay and Craigs List. I had been looking for a Canon 5D MK II ever since the III came out and I recently had finally found one on CL that was like new in the box with 1246 shutter actuation's for $900.00. I too will only consider like new in the box equipment with all accessories. You are exactly correct when you stated it showed care the seller takes in his/her photographic equipment.

What you say is true for factory warranties, but retailers, such as B&H, provide store warranties for used sales. I think B&H's is 90 days. The private seller isn't likely to do that and that needs to be considered when setting a price.

Are warranties truly that important on used equipment? I have bought many used photo items on ebay and CL and have never had an issue with things not working, and the savings were significant not only with new, but used from KEH and the NYC big boys. With ebay you have a stellar buyer protection plan, and with CL you test drive it prior to purchase.

The normal warranty for used equipment from dealers is usually no more than 30-90 days and I have found you are paying more for used equipment from them. Reference my previous post in which I bought a used like new in the box with 1246 shutter actuation's, Conon 5D MK II for $900.00 off of Craig's List, and when I tested it, it was indeed like new and worked perfectly. KEH's consistent price was in the $1600.00 range with a 180 day warranty. With a savings of $700.00 I do believe I'll take the chance without a warranty.

I had mine for sale for almost 9 months on UHH and Amazon. I finally took about $900 for it. It was in excellent conditions and well worth the price.

I think you'll find that is about what you will get for it. Maybe a little less; maybe a little more.

You may want to try trading it for the newer lens with Adorama, B&H or one of the other houses. When I've talked with them, they will give you more in a trade and in them just purchasing it.

When purchasing the new lens, I strongly recommend you check out greentoe.com. You put in a bid on a product and if your bid is accepted you will get the item.

I recently bid on a lens and a tripod w/gimball head and saved about $200 over prices listed on Adorama, B&H, and Amazon.

They only sell new and US products, so you don't have to worry about Gray market. I paid approximately what a gray market product would cost.

Observing the comments including mine.
It is worth what someone is willing to pay.

Anything is always worth what someone is willing to pay. Is a Picasso worth $179 million? Apparently so, as that's what someone paid yesterday.

Maybe a better question is: what is a reasonable price I should ask for my lens.

$850-$950 seems to be the going range.

Now you've opened a whole new can of worms. Just who is to say what "reasonable" is? It is quite possible that whoever paid $179 million thought that price to be "reasonable", maybe even a "bargain."
