That's theessence of myphone call to Canon Support. Their main effort is to avoid transfer of warranty for re-sold merchandise or used stuff. He even said hey'd fix Gray Market stuff with a proof of Purchase of new equipment.

I purchased a "white box" 24-105 L, new, and it is not marked refurb, anywhere, and was sold as new.

In my conversation with canon, apparently, they sell to resellers, brand new white box items. They also sell regular box items to resellers, only without the warranty.

I really don't know why canon does this, except maybe to sell more items, but there is no reason they shouldn't warranty EVERYTHING THEY SELL. Regardless of box, providing it's within the warranty period.

If your looking at a white box item, ASK if it's a refurb or new.

Craig, my question about if anyone has had a new product repaired under warranty was to see if there is much danger in buying used. I have bought several and sold several lenses and I've never had a problem with a lens(knock on wood)!!
Here is what I know but if you talked to Canon you may already have all your answers. There is almost more miss-info about this than whether to turn IS off on a tripod!!
A white box means it's a refurb and they are stamped with "refurb".
A kit only comes with a white box if it's a refurb kit only.
New kits(non-refurb kits), come in std. Canon new boxes.
Warrenties are NOT transferable, no matter how many blank warranty cards you get with it. Canon does not use the warranty cards for anything. Canon uses the original bill of sale for warranty work, not warranty cards.
If you buy the lens/camera from an authorized Canon dealer that bought the item resale from Canon then you are the original purchaser. If not, it's actually a used item even if it's in the box and sealed. If the seller provides you with the original bill of sale then no one knows that you are not that original purchaser and you can get it repaired under warranty for the first 12 mos.
Canon will repair ANY canon product at their regular cost, whether it's grey market, used or had ten owners, as long as it's in service life(that means Canon still makes parts).
The only risk with Canon grey market is that YOU will have to pay for the repair in spite of the fact that it's brand new and you got a warranty card with it, but yes, they will repair it, just for a fee. That's NOT true with all brands.
I personally have not, nor have known anybody that's ever had a problem with a Canon product. But my circle is pretty small, as you could probably guess by how much people yell at me here, I have no friends!!
Good luck with your purchase. If it was me, I would buy it!! I bought one used lens that's out of service life for $3.5K and so far it still works!!!

PS, you probably already know all this but maybe someone else following this can benefit.
Craig, my question about if anyone has had a new p... (show quote)

FYI My new 6D + 24-105 kit from Adorama came with the lens in a white box as did a new USA issue EF-S 18-135 from SnapNFlash. This came with all the standard Canon USA paperwork.
I have no confirmation but I'm told that there are eBay sellers who buy kits to split and that this is often the source of the 'White box" items you frequently see.

I sent in one of my 24-105mm lens in for service after 5 years! The warranty had long expired. It stopped being able to AF at the wide end. It cost $130.00 plus shipping to repair it.

Same thing happened to my 24-105 L Canon last year ( after 5 years ) - wouldn't focus at the long end, but Canon NZ charged $400 to fix it!!...D.

I just sent my 24-105L in for service at the 11 month mark. They replaced the zoom mechanism and then once it was back I noticed that the focus ring when turned had a very gritty noise (both manual and auto focusing), called Canon and it was shipped right back for them to them to put in a new focus mechanism. All is well now but I was almost three weeks without one of my favorite lenses. All covered under warranty.

I wouldn't be too worried about most white box purchases. Those places usually give you 30 days return.

But Canon products aren't that much different from anything else sold today, mass production items can have a problem from time to time. Most are fine for the long run. I purchased a brand new 47" LG TV, and it crashed right after the warranty. I'm sure alot of others are still going strong.

SS,
I think you're wrong on this. I bought a new 6D that came with the 24 – 105 mm lens. The lens was in a white box but it was a new lens not refurbished. It had all the warranty cards and everything with it.Jim D

Jim, you are absolutely right, and I am wrong.
I called Canon and asked, and yes, there are white boxes that are for NEW items.
AND,get ready for this, I was told that recently there is a fourth box. It's a generic brown box that has lots of different pictures on it and not sure how they mark what's inside.
But the white boxes are from kits and the white refurb boxes may or may not be marked, though they may be different!
But, there may be the bait and switchers using their own boxes !!!

Neither have I sent a Canon lens in for work. All I know is when I bought this lens (for a lot more) I found it nearly impossible to take a bad picture. That's true love.

The 24-105L is a Cadillac lens. I have had mine for about 5 years and taken countless thousands of pictured with it and it's still great. I does suffer from lens creep when in the downward position, and I do wish it had a lock on it at 24mm, but still one of the best lenses in my arsenal.
