Looks like the kind of heat waves I always see when I'm dying of thirst in the Gobi desert. Man I hate when that happens. ;) pith

It's heat waves. We get them all the time here in Iowa. Especially on plowed fields. Heat rises from the ground when the soil gets warm and causes that effect. Was it a warm day out?

It's caused by the heat of the engine exhaust reflecting off the runway... look on either side.

Oh good grief. No it is not. This was correctly answered MANY posts ago.

The same shimmer effect is seen on the metal roof at right.

Another thread of lousy information, guesses, and lack of knowledge.

Don't over look the exhaust from the engine.

If the plane's engine was tunning, the hot exhaust could cause the difference in refractive index (so-called "heat waves") between the air behind the plane and the surroundings.

So explain how that makes the same effect on the metal roof. Engine exhaust?
